Plastic pollution is ubiquitous in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. waste exposed to the environment creates problems of significant concern for all life forms. production accumulation natural are occurring at an unprecedented rate due indiscriminate use, inadequate recycling, deposits landfills. In 2019, global plastic was 370 million tons, with only 9% it being recycled, 12% incinerated, remaining left or The leakage wastes into ecosystems rate. management a challenging problem researchers, policymakers, citizens, other stakeholders. Therefore, here, we summarize current understanding concerns plastics (microplastics nanoplastics) on overall goal this review provide background assessment adverse effects ecosystems; interlink sustainable development goals; address policy initiatives under transdisciplinary approaches through cycle assessment, circular economy, sustainability; identify knowledge gaps; recommendations. community involvement socio-economic inputs different countries presented discussed. ban policies public awareness likely major mitigation interventions. need circularity assess potential environmental impacts resources used throughout product’s span emphasized. Microplastic pollution research has suffered from inadequate data and tools for spectral (Raman infrared) classification. Spectral matching often are not accurate microplastics identification cost-prohibitive. Lack of accuracy stems the diversity microplastic pollutants, which represented in libraries. Here, we propose a viable software solution: Open Specy. Specy is on web (www.openspecy.org) an R package. free allows users to view, process, identify, share their spectra community library. Users can upload process using smoothing (Savitzky-Golay filter) polynomial baseline correction techniques (IModPolyFit). The processed spectrum be downloaded used other applications or identified onboard reference library correlation-based criteria. Specy's sharing session log features ensure reproducible results. houses growing spectra, increasingly represents as contaminant suite. We compared functionality commonly analysis software. found that was only open source with library, had comparable popular (OMNIC Picta KnowItAll). Future developments will enhance grows through community-contributed community-developed code. also beyond analysis. code (CC-BY-4.0, attribution only) (https://github.com/wincowgerDEV/OpenSpecy).

Microplastics (MPs), tiny particles broken down from larger pieces of plastics, have accumulated everywhere on the earth. As an inert carbon stream in aquatic environment, they been reported as carriers for heavy metals and exhibit diverse interactive effects. However, these interactions are still poorly understood, especially mechanisms driving how pose risks living organisms. In this mini review, a bibliometric analysis field was conducted then were examined, emphasizing important roles microorganisms interactions. Their combined toxic effects potential hazards to human health also discussed. Finally, future research directions suggested. This review summarized recent progress highlighted essential microbes between MPs with hope promote more studies unveil action reduce/eliminate associated MP presence.
