Efficient wastewater treatment accompanied by sustainable "nutrients/pollutants waste-wastewater-resources/energy nexus" management is acting as a prominent and urgent global issue since severe pollution has occurred increasingly. Diverting wastes from into the value-added microalgal-biomass stream promising goal using biological technologies. This review proposed an idea of upgrading current microalgal immobilized system. Firstly, systematic analysis immobilization technology displayed through in-depth discussion on why microalgae for treatment. Subsequently, main technical approaches employed pollutant removal mechanisms are summarized. Furthermore, high-tech technologies to promote large-scale production application potentials in diverse bioreactors downstream applications lead upgradation closer, feasibility existing systems thoroughly discussed. Eventually, several research directions toward future system upgrading. Together, it appears that further microalgae-based can be recognized achievable alternative make more realistic.
