Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive pollutants in the natural environment and contribute to increased levels of illness both animals humans. However, specific impacts MPs on skin damage alopecia not yet well understood. In this study, we have examined effects two types polystyrene (pristine aged) hair follicle mice. UV irradiation changed chemical physical properties aged MPs, including functional groups, surface roughness, contact angles. vivo vitro experiments, cell injuries related oxidative stress, apoptosis, tight junctions (TJs), alopecia, mitochondrial dysfunction, other damages were observed. Mechanistically, can induce TJs via stress pathway inhibition antioxidant-related proteins, lead alopecia. The regulation apoptosis was also observed, is involved ROS-mediated signaling pathway. Importantly, showed exacerbated toxicity, which may be due their elevated irregularities altered compositions. Collectively, study suggests a potential therapeutic approach for caused by pollution.

Abstract Polystyrene foam, which is used as a buoyant material in mariculture, common constituent of marine plastic debris. Here, we conduct analyses on polystyrene foam debris collected the east coast Xiamen Island, China, and associated plastic-burrowing clamworms. We apply interferometry, mass spectrometry microscopy to fragments excreted by benthic clamworms ( Perinereis vancaurica ). find evidence digestion degradation during passage clamworm gut leading formation accumulation microplastics, with mean diameter 0.6 ± 0.2 mm. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis intestines indicated diverse bacterial microbiome, dominated Acinetobacter Ruegeria bacteria. Further characterization confirmed that was degraded representative isolates johnsonii , Brevibacterium casei arenilitoris . During 30-day incubation, observed very slight decrease weight, changes chemical group thermal characteristic, production metabolic intermediates. Our findings indicate polystyrene-degrading bacteria microbiome may influence fragmentation ecosystems.
