This study provided an in-depth understanding of enhanced algae inactivation by combining ultraviolet and peracetic acid (UV/PAA) selecting Microcystis aeruginosa as the target species. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests scavenging experiments direct evidence on formed reactive species (RSs) indicated dominant role RSs including singlet oxygen (1O2) hydroxyl (HO•) organic (RO•) radicals in inactivation. Based kinetic model determined steady-state concentration RSs, contribution was quantitatively assessed with second-order rate constants for HO•, RO•, 1O2 2.67 × 109, 3.44 1010, 1.72 109 M-1 s-1, respectively. Afterward, coexisting bi/carbonate, acting a shuttle, that promotes transformation from HO• to RO• evidenced account better performance UV/PAA system under natural water background. Subsequently, along evaluation preoxidation modify coagulation-sedimentation, possible application process removal advanced.
