Microalgae-based wastewater treatment has been conceived to obtain reclaimed water and produce microalgal biomass for bio-based products biofuels generation. However, harvesting is challenging expensive, hence one of the main bottlenecks full-scale implementation. Finding an integrated approach that covers concepts engineering, green chemistry application microbial anabolism driven towards processes, mandatory widespread establishment microalgae plants. By using nature-based substances applying chemical functionalization in already established methods, costs processes could be reduced while preventing contamination. Moreover, produced during have unique culture characteristics, such as consortia, which are primarily composed bacteria, should accounted prior downstream processing. The aim this review examine recent advances recovery systems, considering impact consortia variability. available technologies, coagulation/flocculation, coupled sedimentation differential air flotation, provided. Additionally, promising technologies discussed, including autoflocculation, bioflocculation, new filtration materials, nanotechnology, microfluidic magnetic methods.
