Abstract Growing environmental concerns and the need to adopt a circular economy have highlighted importance of waste valorization for resource recovery. Microbial consortia-enabled biotechnologies made significant developments in biomanufacturing valuable resources from biomass that serve as suitable alternatives petrochemical-derived products. These microbial consortia-based processes are designed following top-down or bottom-up engineering approach. The approach is classical method uses variables selectively steer an existing consortium achieve target function. While high-throughput sequencing has enabled community characterization, major challenge disentangle complex interactions manipulate structure function accordingly. prior knowledge metabolic pathway possible among partners design engineer synthetic consortia. This strategy offers some control over composition targeted bioprocesses, but challenges remain optimal assembly methods long-term stability. In this review, we present recent advancements, challenges, opportunities further improvement using approaches microbiome engineering.
