Constructed wetland (CW) is a critical ecological engineering for wastewater treatment and improvement of water quality. Nitrogen (N) removal one the vital functions CWs during operation, N in mainly affected by aquatic plants denitrification carried out microbes. However, due to their low efficiency instability removal, further applications are limited. The review provides view two basic characteristics plants, radial oxygen loss (ROL) root exudates, coupled effect on processes CWs. First, role presented. individual roles ROL exudates regulating denitrification, as well interaction this process, have been discussed. Also, limitation conventional techniques reveal between plant microbes has highlighted. Further research coupling regulatory mechanisms may be conducted develop an optimal design improve biological removal.
