The microbial biotransformation of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) by novel anaerobic consortia enriched from sediments an industrial effluent channel and the river Ravi in Pakistan was examined. were capable biotransforming α-, β-, γ-, δ-HCH through reductive dichloroelimination, resulting formation benzene monochlorobenzene. Concerning γ-HCH cultures, isotopic fractionations for carbon (εC) − 5.3 ± 0.4 (‰) 10.6 1.2 (‰), while chlorine (εCl) 4.4 7.8 0.9 respectively. Furthermore, lambda values (Λ), representing correlation δ13C δ37Cl fractionation, determined to be 1.1 0.1 1.3 biotransformation, suggesting a dichloroelimination as initial step HCH both cultures. Amplicon sequencing targeting 16S rRNA genes revealed that Desulfomicrobium populations considerably increased indicating their possible involvement degradation process. These findings suggest Desulfomicrobium-like may have important role HCH-degrading could useful bioaugmentation agents bioremediation HCH-contaminated sites Pakistan.
