Plastics used in daily life are often colored for esthetic and functional purposes. Nevertheless, little is known about the photochemical activity of microplastics associated risks that ubiquitous environment. In this study, we report strong with cadmium pigments. These can be excited by photons within solar spectrum (<514 nm), readily generating •OH, O2•-, H2O2. Consequently, they effectively degrade 17β-estradiol, achieving >91% degradation 23 h under simulated exposure. Among different pigments, those a pigment S/Se ratio 2:5 exhibited highest photoactivity. This attributed to narrow band gap, fast charge separation, efficient transfer microplastics, as suggested energy band, photocurrent, electrochemical impedance results. Meanwhile, hazardous Cd2+ was leached from mainly owing oxidation lattices photogenerated holes. Our results reveal photoactive inorganic pigments behave drastically differently uncolored counterparts. highlights importance considering critical factor better assessing environmental fate plastic products.

Microplastics (MPs) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) are typical environmental pollutants, yet their interactions in aquatic systems remain poorly understood. This study investigates the mutual influence between Cr(VI) both virgin aged polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) under light conditions. Concentration kinetics revealed that total concentration remained stable across all systems, while concentrations decreased over time, indicating PS-MPs accelerate reduction of to Cr(III). Conversely, it had been found promoted aging PS-MPs, this was evidenced by an increase surface roughness generation oxygen-containing functional groups. led a rise O/C ratio carbonyl index, providing additional evidence for PS. The photoaging of nanoplastics (NPs) mediated by heavy metals and the transport mechanisms products have been widely overlooked. This study demonstrated that cadmium ion (Cd(II)) mediation accelerated polystyrene NPs (carboxyl-modified CNPs, amino-modified ANPs, sulfonate, amino comodified SANPs) generating more •OH 1O2, thereby altering their physicochemical properties consequent behavior. Kinetic attachment models Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory proved Cd(II)-mediated process had diverse effects on retention surface-functionalized in water-saturated sand media. In particular, Cd(II) at 50 mg/L increased hydroxyl carboxyl groups aged facilitating 20.3% with reduced k2 (0.036 vs 0.021) φmax (74.804 KBT 85.127 KBT) values.
