Oil palm remains an important source of rural income in South East Asia. At the same time, Indonesia has become a hotspot for large-scale species extinction and loss biodiversity favour agricultural production. The present study sets out to assess environmental performance smallholder oil production with respect biodiversity. Using panel dataset that combines conventional farm data together account plant diversity, we estimate restricted hyperbolic distance function. We integrate as undesirable output into model which allows explaining shortfalls derivation shadow prices conservation. find substantial inefficiency, is partly explained by both chemical manual weeding practices, highlighting potential improvements economic dimension. Moreover, value conserving one average on farmers plantation was 325 USD 2018. Payments ecosystem services schemes could be viable policy response conserve meaningful levels while simultaneously allowing smallholders increase output. In general, addressing drivers PES designs amplifies its effect without reducing

Oil palm cultivation has experienced explosive expansion in recent decades. Although the oil boom serious environmental and socioeconomic consequences, only issues have garnered attention public discussion synthesis studies. In this study, we synthesize literature on impacts of across various observation units spatial temporal scales, which is significant relevance to policymakers, researchers, wider public. Our review demonstrates that a double-edged sword. On one hand, it significantly helped both producing non-producing countries’ economies by facilitating (re)export crude its byproducts creating employment opportunities. This stimulated rural economies, led poverty reduction, improved food security diets for households producer countries. other increased conflicts tension between local communities agro-industrial companies, worsened workers’ conditions, widened domestic economic inequality areas within given country. Monetary quantification costs palm’s negative social indicates loss ecosystem services far outweighs benefits derived from production palm. The direct income through harvest sales are more evident Southeast Asia frontier, where marketing relatively advanced well-integrated into global value chains. outcomes observed all regions, with effects African frontiers. We propose multiple actionable research policy recommendations may jointly lead inclusive sustainable (and environmental) cultivation. consequences at level, American frontiers, role gender systems remain understudied. Hence, studies should be conducted.

Abstract While international trade in agricultural commodities can spur economic development especially where governance is strong, there are also concerns about the local impacts of commodity production and their distribution on environment people. The sustainable goals (SDGs), though seeing as a means to support achievement, recognise need address potential negative social environmental impacts. It therefore important assess contribution SDGs areas. widely acknowledged, but much less known its impacts, how this affects poverty reduction objectives across different dimensions. Abstract Oil palm cultivation has improved living standards and alleviated the poverty of many smallholder farmers. However, challenges such as climate change, aging palms negative sentiments in major markets, threaten wellbeing raise question on farmers’ resilience, which remains poorly understood. Using primary data from Indonesia, largest oil producer world, we measure evaluate resilience farmers using Sustainable Livelihoods Approach. Our results revealed five classes smallholders with different levels resilience: vulnerable, economically socially constrained, low-skilled, semi-secure adaptive smallholders. The least resilient group are majorly older local farmers, who established plantations independently. Meanwhile, most is dominated by participated migration program, past, received support government to start plantations. study highlights heterogeneity smallholders’ livelihood need for inclusive tailored interventions various establish sustainable communities.

The concept of sustainability in agri-food supply chains (AFSCs) is gaining traction among researchers and practitioners. There has been a considerable effort to define identify frameworks for assessing, monitoring, improving practices within systems organizations. multi-capital approach presents an alternative tool that integrates various types capital provide deeper understanding assessment the impacts across different facets system. This review systematically examines existing research on AFSC indicators from perspective. Based 106 articles, 116 databases (Web Science, Scopus, others) are identified. These assigned specific actors forms capital. Their role evaluating AFSCs through lens examined. analysis also identifies most significant associated with each actor. leads development structured framework helps assess their resources pinpoint challenges. Following this review, theoretical derived, connecting capital, key themes, relevant Sustainable Development Goals. provides comprehensive assets guiding strategic actions AFSC.
