Bioretention is a widely used countermeasure to address stormwater runoff issues and restore the urban water balance. This review investigated variety of designs local contexts covered by earlier studies, as well means for assessing hydrological performance bioretention system. It built on analysis 75 documents discuss adequacy experimental setups or models evaluation different indicators, summarise current knowledge regarding impact context design parameters hydrologic functioning systems. The literature was found only partially cover potential designs, sometimes omit critical information. Studies were instance concentrated in regions with low seasonal rainfall variability which limits investigating drought resilience more generally restricts applicability their findings other climate conditions. Regarding design, use environmental-friendly materials (renewable materials) alternatives traditional (sand, gravel, geotextile), simpler limited inputs external (e.g. concrete polymeric materials), remains largely overlooked. Besides, over representation lined system studies leads lack understanding interactions between surrounding soil, despite evidence overall case unlined In reviewed certain limitations most commonly monitoring modelling methods identified. Event-based short-term approaches made up large proportion methods, but they lead inaccuracies annual long-term performance. 1D gained popularity due ease use, simplification configuration processes thus influence rarely discussed.

Like many coastal lagoons in several countries, “Navío Quebrado” lagoon (La Guajira-Colombia) is a very delicate and precious environment; indeed, it nationally recognized Flora Fauna Sanctuary. Several factors, amongst which climate change, are threatening its existence because of changes the governing hydro-morphological processes. A first step to address this problem certainly understand hydrological behavior be able replicate via simulation recent history then infer likely futures. These potential futures will marked by water input tributary, Camarones River, modified exchange with sea, according foreseen sea level rise pattern, as well different evaporation from free surface, temperature changes. In order achieve required ability simulate future scenarios, data on actual have gathered, i.e. monitoring system has set up, date not existent. Conceptually, designing suitable complex issue seems easy implement. However, environmental socio-cultural socio-economic context makes every little hard climb. An extremely simple –almost “primitive”- been up case based basic measurements current velocity levels direct participation local stakeholders, all National Park unit All may clash latest groovy advances science, like situ automatized sensors, remote sensing, machine learning digital twins, improvements possible desirable. But strong positive points: providing surprisingly reasonable and…it working at almost zero additional cost. technical difficulties made exercise interesting itself worth being shared. Its novelty lies showing how old, methods offer solution new challenges. This humble experience help other similar situations across world.

As Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) is a key strategy in integrated urban water management worldwide, there need for robust monitoring of WSUD systems. Being economical and flexible operation communication, low-cost sensor systems show great potential to mainstream digital management. Yet, such are insufficiently tested, casting doubt on the reliability their measurements. Here, we document testing approach pressure transducer level (KIT0139) traditional (OTT PLS) both laboratory field conditions. We tested six different devices under three temperatures relevant tropical climate: 25, 30, 35 °C proposed calibration approach. Results reveal that sensors were as individual performed consistently After calibration, provided sufficient accuracy (±10mm) precision levels more than 0.05m. While varying flow direction did not significantly influence performance, showed should be done devices. In addition, large (>5 °C) variations temperature wet/dry conditions may also performance sensors. The was validated 3-month experiment, confirming this model can effectively replace climates. Our study confirms systematic thorough needed realize full scientific-grade applications. provide practical recommendations conduct from field.

Abstract Low-cost sensors integrated with the Internet of Things can enable real-time envi-ronmental monitoring networks and provide valuable water quality informationto public. However, accuracy precision values measured bythe are critical for widespread adoption. In this study, 19 different low-cost sensors, commonly found in literature, from four manufacturersare tested measuring five parameters: pH, dissolved oxygen,oxidation-reduction potential, turbidity, temperature. The sensorsare evaluated each parameter by calculating error com-pared to a typical multiparameter probe assumed as reference. comparisonwas performed controlled environment simultaneous measurements ofreal samples. relative ranged -0.33 33.77% most them were ≤ 5%. pH temperature ones accurate results. conclusion, complementary alternative toquickly detect changes parameters. Further studies necessaryto establish guideline operation maintenance sensors.
