Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a rapidly growing technology at the forefront of sustainable chemistry, leveraging ability microorganisms to catalyze electrochemical reactions synthesize valuable compounds from renewable energy sources. The reduction CO2 major target application for MES, but research in this area has been stifled, especially with use direct electron transfer (DET)-based microbial systems. fundamental hurdle that needs be overcome low efficiency largely attributed minimal access owing its solubility electrolyte. With their tunable physical properties, ionic liquids present potential solution challenge and have previously shown promise facilitating efficient electroreduction by increasing solubility. However, MES remains unexplored. In study, we investigated role 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM][Ac]) using Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 as model DET strain. Electrochemical investigations demonstrated S. biocathodes directly convert formate faradaic 34.5 ± 26.1%. addition [EMIM][Ac] system significantly increased cathodic current density enhanced 94.5 4.3% while concurrently amplifying product yield 34 23 μM 366 μM. These findings demonstrate can serve efficient, biocompatible cosolvents value-added products, holding more robust applications MES.
