Located at the crossroads of two continents and southeastern edge Mediterranean Basin, Anatolia was one most important Pleistocene glacial refugia in Western Palaearctic. As part Irano-Anatolian, Caucasus Basin biodiversity hotspots, this region is also home to a rich avian community including nearly 400 breeding species. Nevertheless, research addressing genetic structure diversity local bird populations limited, information on still scant, especially when compared other large peninsulas, namely Balkan, Italian Iberian ones. In study, we contribute filling gap by biogeographic pattern four common resident songbirds—the Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus), great (Parus major), chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) blackbird (Turdus merula)—and endemic species—the Krüper’s nuthatch (Sitta krueperi)—by amplifying mitochondrial DNA genes individuals from (n = 329) comparing their sequences those conspecifics rest distribution range across western Palaearctic 357) deposited public databases. Understanding the interplay between genetic drift, natural selection, gene flow, and demographic history in driving phenotypic genomic differentiation of insular populations can help us gain insight into speciation process. Comparing patterns across different taxa subjected to similar selective pressures upon colonizing oceanic islands provides opportunity study repeated evolution identify shared their landscapes differentiation. We selected four species passerine birds (Common Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs/canariensis, Red-billed Chough Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax, House Finch Haemorhous mexicanus Dark-eyed/island Junco hyemalis/insularis) that have both mainland populations. Changes body size island were consistent with rule. For each species, we sequenced whole genomes from individuals infer history, characterize differentiation, factors shaping them. estimated relative (F

Abstract The European Robin Erithacus rubecula is currently treated as a single species with eight subspecies. A previous molecular study and new molecular, morphometric bioacoustic data reported here strongly support the recognition of three in this complex: E. (Europe, North Africa Macaronesia except central Canary Islands), superbus (Tenerife) recently described subspecies on Gran Canaria which we raise to rank marionae . taxa Tenerife have previously been lumped taxon but differ from each other territorial songs, tic calls, seep calls wing length. All are characterised by moderate high levels interspecific mitochondrial DNA sequence divergence (mean 4.2–4.8%). Phylogenetic analysis indicates that sister + Recognition Robins separate adds two single‐island endemics Islands avifauna.

Abstract Islands as biodiversity sinks due to their small population size and low genetic variation are recently challenged by a phenomenon where continental lineage originates from islands. This raises an important question about through what demographic processes insular is introduced the continent its evolutionary consequences on continent.
