Tropical coral reefs are among the most affected ecosystems by climate change and face increasing loss in coming decades. Effective conservation strategies that maximize ecosystem resilience must be informed accurate characterization of extant genetic diversity population structure together with an understanding adaptive potential keystone species. Here we analyzed samples from Tara Pacific Expedition (2016-2018) completed 18,000 km longitudinal transect Ocean sampling three widespread corals-Pocillopora meandrina, Porites lobata, Millepora cf. platyphylla-across 33 sites 11 islands. Using deep metagenomic sequencing 269 colonies conjunction morphological analyses variability data, can show despite a targeted encompasses multiple cryptic These species exhibit disparate biogeographic patterns and, importantly, distinct evolutionary identical environmental regimes. Our findings demonstrate on basin scale trajectories species-specific only part predicted environment. This highlights integrate multi-species investigations to discern genomic footprints shaped selection as well for change.

Heat waves are causing declines in coral reefs globally. Coral thermal responses depend on multiple, interacting drivers, such as past exposure, endosymbiont community composition, and host genotype. This makes the understanding of their relative roles adaptive and/or plastic crucial for anticipating impacts future warming. Here, we extracted DNA RNA from 102 Pocillopora colonies collected 32 sites 11 islands across Pacific Ocean to characterize host-photosymbiont fidelity investigate patterns gene expression a historical gradient. We report high show that microalgal respond different drivers. Differences photosymbiotic association had only weak expression, which was more strongly correlated with environment, whereas, photosymbiont largely determined by lineage. Overall, our results reveal three-tiered strategy acclimatization underpinned specificity, transcriptomic plasticity, differential under extreme

Abstract Reef-building corals live in close mutualism with dinoflagellate algae (family Symbiodiniaceae), which play key roles coral physiological performance and survival. Association patterns between host species endosymbiont their significance are still not fully understood, but they seem to affect the ability of hosts inhabit different environments resilience climate change. In this work, we used next-generation sequencing Internal Transcribed Spacer 2 region ribosomal DNA determine diversity composition Symbiodiniaceae community Pocillopora from Colombia, Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP). We sampled 243 colonies four localities characterized by distinct sea surface temperature, turbidity, proximity coast. Two genera Symbiodiniaceae, Durusdinium Cladocopium were found associated mitochondrial Open Reading Frame (mtORF) types. latusorum was highly specific mtORF type 1, while C. pacificum exclusively 3. contrast, glynnii both Furthermore, a -dominated symbiont occurred cooler less turbid localities, Durusdinium- dominated high temperature water irrespective type. These results suggest that lineages associate response local environmental conditions. The partner under particular conditions ( - combination), also maintain partnership types) may be understanding genus on ETP reefs.

Understanding how tropical corals respond to temperatures is important evaluating their capacity persist in a warmer future. We studied the common Pacific coral Pocillopora over 44° of latitude, and used populations at three islands with different thermal regimes compare responses temperature using performance curves (TPCs) for respiration gross photosynthesis. Corals were sampled local autumn from Moorea, Guam Okinawa, where mean±s.d. annual seawater 28.0±0.9°C, 28.9±0.7°C 25.1±3.4°C, respectively. TPCs similar among latitudes, optimum (Topt) was above maximum all islands, lowest Okinawa. photosynthesis wider, implying greater eurytopy, higher Topt Moorea versus but daily 13% year Okinawa 53% Guam. There variation than or which translated large supply metabolic energy photosynthetically fixed carbon latitudes. Despite these trends, differences spp. not profoundly across reducing likelihood that could better match phenotypes future more extreme through migration. Any such response would place premium on high plasticity tolerance seasonal variations budgets.

Abstract Cryptic species (evolutionarily distinct lineages that do not align with morphologically defined species) are being increasingly discovered but poorly integrated into ecological theory. In particular, we still lack a useful understanding of if and how cryptic differ in ways affect community recovery from disturbances responses to anthropogenic stressors, such as the removal consumers pollution nutrients. On coral reefs, nutrient increases growth macroalgae displace corals. Reductions herbivorous fishes reduce suppression macroalgae, while reductions coralivorous predation on An unresolved question is respond differently these impacts, thereby differing their ability influence dynamics maintain dominance. Therefore, assessed response Pocillopora over period three years following simulated disturbance cyclone depended experimental reduction fish consumer pressure addition. After years, five cryptic, genetically distinct, recruited reef. However, recruitment was dominated by two species: tuahiniensis (46%) meandrina (43%). Under ambient conditions, P. similar, experimentally reducing increased up 73% reduced 49%. both species, enrichment colony rates equally, colonies grew faster were 25% larger after than those meandrina, unaffected pressure. Predation excavating corallivorous higher for , especially under enrichment. contrast, polyp extension (an indicator elevated heterotrophic feeding well susceptibility attractiveness corallivores) lower low medium Overall, uncovered differences foundation pervasive stressors reefs. Our results demonstrate key which may contribute diversity can support resilience or increase extinction risk.

The conservation and management of coral reef ecosystems will benefit from accurate assessments reef-building species diversity. However, the true diversity corals may be obfuscated by cryptic yet genetically distinct groups, which are likely more pervasive than currently recognised. Here, we investigate prevalence groups assess evidence for their permeability to gene flow (hybridisation) via a structured literature review genomic studies. Using reproducible criteria detect genetic that sympatric, find 68% nominal represented in population studies show comprising partially reproductively isolated these often linked flow. Cryptic frequently segregate environment, especially depth, differ phenotypic characteristics including resilience heat stress. This hidden biodiversity creates challenges restoration planning not well appreciated, hiding declines, biasing estimates species' breadth, overestimating stressors, yielding uncertainty evolutionary dynamics inferred past studies, implying reproductive barriers limit mating between local translocated corals. Incorporating expectation taxa with incomplete boundaries encountered is critical long-term success programs. Studying phenomena detail directly goals. Thus, recommendations best practice strategies identifying hybridisation. In addition, present an untapped resource studying speciation could provide rich opportunities collaboration among biologists fill key knowledge gaps relevant restoration.

Species of Amanita sect. Vaginatae (Fr.) Quél. are challenging to delimitate due the morphological similarity or morphostasis among different taxa. In this study, a multi-locus (nuc rDNA region encompassing internal transcribed spacers 1 and 2 with 5.8S rDNA, D1-D3 domains nuc 28S partial sequences translation elongation factor 1-a, second largest subunit RNA polymerase II) phylogeny was employed investigate species diversity section in eastern China. Sixteen were recognized, including four new species; namely, A. circulata, multicingulata, orientalis, sinofulva. They documented illustrated descriptions, ecological evidence, comparisons similar species. A key from China is provided.
