English language teachers have long recognised pop songs' potential for engaging students and establishing positive classroom environments conducive to learning. Educational publishers increasingly incorporate music into their coursebooks, including specially commissioned 'ELT songs', whose lyrics feature aspects of target language. This Element explores the phenomenon ELT songs from authors' insider perspective as songwriters. It considers relationship between in songs, what this means using classroom, historical developments through which emerged, contexts they are written, listened to, made. Through literature review reflection, authors derive a framework twelve criteria ten dilemmas guide songwriting, before applying it an analysis songwriting process. The final section proposes model multidisciplinary collaboration songwriters non-musician collaborators authors, teachers, publishers.
