ABSTRACT Farmers need to urgently adapt changing climate conditions for sustainable rural livelihoods. Index insurance is often discussed as a promising adaptation strategy. Yet, clear differentiation between ex‐ante (insured but no damage) and ex‐post (payout) impacts of index still scarce. Using framed field experiment, we analyse index‐based crop on indicators welfare resilience among rainfed farmers in Uzbekistan. Results suggest that induces positive effects all measured outcomes (consumption, fertiliser, savings farm wealth). Furthermore, it reduces the credits by strengthening financial after droughts. Our results contribute assessing efficacy its implications welfare.

Conspicuous consumption, specialised consumption of high visibility but without apparent economic benefit, is reducing investment in productive assets and thus hindering development low-income countries. In previous research, the phenomenon was commonly explained by status-seeking herding behaviour. Our study follows a novel angle testing role risk sharing, assuming that into social status perceived to increase access informal credits times crises. We conduct random-effects hurdle model along lab-in-the-field experiment sample 197 wheat farmers Uzbekistan, country characterised levels uncertainty. Within our experimental setup, both attitude real-life management decision are found be significant determinants conspicuous consumption. findings support notion complex decision-making process with sharing as one important motivator. Providing first empirical evidence on topic, have implications beyond narrowly defined case: argue strengthening options formal risk-sharing tools might remove motivators for consumption; thus, it could improve welfare households worldwide allowing more scarce financial resources.
