The assessment of stress-related hormone levels using non-invasive methods has gained popularity in mammal and bird welfare, yet its application reptiles remains limited. Particularly, the exploration physiological measures such as faecal corticosterone metabolites (FCMs) for reptilian welfare scarcely been explored. This study aims to validate two enzyme immunoassays (5α-pregnane-3ß,11ß,21-triol-20-one 11-oxoaetiocholanolone EIA) monitoring FCM European common wall lizard (Podarcis muralis). We collected daily samples before (baseline) after (post-treatment phase) inducing elevated transdermal administration (pharmacological treatment) handling/confinement (biological treatment). also conducted behavioural observations explore relationship between changes behaviour. Although treatments induced significant increases levels, effect was much larger pharmacological one. Transdermal a cumulative increase FCMs over treatment period, with higher response observed females. In contrast, biological yielded smaller peaks, no sex differences. Overall, 5α-pregnane-3ß,11ß,21-triol-20-one EIA appeared be more sensitive detecting these effects. Regarding behaviour, both led increased hiding decreased basking compared baseline. effects were pronounced animals subjected handling/confinement, despite increases. Our results confirm suitability an male female lizards provide insights into complexities integrated approaches assess stress, highlighting need further research on direct evaluate reptile welfare.

Although the private keeping of reptiles has boomed in most western countries since millennium, studies dealing with recognition and promotion welfare these seem to represent a blind spot scientific attention. The vast majority from field animal science still concern mammals birds. leopard gecko is probably common lizard that kept domestic terrariums worldwide. Due its characteristic as an ecological generalist, it easy keep breed, considered good “starter reptile” for beginners “condones” husbandry mistakes, even extended periods. However, being mass species not second-class classification. They, too, have equal claim well-being all animals human care. aim study was test hypothesis whether increase stimulus density leads activity behavioural diversity and, thus, welfare. For this purpose, 18 geckos were fed insects ≤1 cm size, both quantity quality behaviour documented analysed pre-intervention, intervention post-intervention stages. In addition, interest indicators could be identified indicate state positive well-being. results showed type enrichment led quantitative doubling levels baseline (total 12,519 elements) 25,366 elements). And 11 months after introduction small insect feeding (post-intervention total 23,267 elements), level significantly increased. diversity, absolute number categories across geckos, also increased, although less than intensity, between (5507 categories) (6451 (6079 categories). clearly show very efficient tool geckos. Attractively, regime can implemented by any keeper without significant additional cost or time, therefore, methods potentially high impact.

Studies on environmental enrichment for captive bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) are still very scarce in the literature, but they of utmost importance search quality life these animals when under human care. Environmental items should be inclusive, allowing disabled to explore them and providing good experiences. Therefore, this study aimed evaluate food strategies increase foraging behavior non-disabled dragons. This work was carried out with six adult dragons, three which had one limb amputated that all limbs, kept at São Paulo Aquarium. Live kingworm larvae (Zophobas morio) were offered as different levels challenge (low, medium, high). Behavioral data collected using focal sampling instantaneous recording, a time interval every 30 s. Results showed more complex challenge, greater frequency dragon foraging. In addition, both amputees non-amputees responded similarly items, differing primarily their activity levels, where amputee individuals tendencies toward ‘stationary’ ‘lying down’ behaviors. More studies reptiles encouraged so management practices become daily protocols better rescuing natural behaviors care, even those anatomical disabilities.

Owens et al. (2024) add to the growing voices stressing importance of considering individual differences in animal welfare and conservation. I advocate for an additional emphasis on between species comparisons degree variation cognition emotion within species. A better understanding factors predicting within-species variability will help conservationists target their efforts. Additionally, caution against invoking circularity using "behavioural traits" predict related behaviours.
