Over the last couple of decades, polar tourism has significantly grown in number visitors and diversified terms activities offered. The COVID-19 pandemic brought to a halt prompted researchers, operators policy-makers alike reflect on how Arctic Antarctic have developed, they are being managed governed and, importantly, influence socio-ecological systems. Given dominance ship-based over other types Polar Regions, we discuss cornerstones developed 50 years explore relevant international regional governance regimes this article. We identify which positive negative biophysical, socio-cultural economic impacts arising from been identified by researchers. It is difficult, if not impossible, disentangle caused alone those that result interactions multiple pressures at all levels (local, global), more research needed develop reliable effective indicators monitor impacts. In addition, better understanding about role tourist experiences might play potentially encouraging long-term behavioural changes among Regions. provided an important opportunity review development management, ask whether emphasis should be placed ‘degrowth’ sector future.

Polar tourism is continuously diversifying in order to provide unique experiences travellers. One of the ways which this currently happens by increasingly integrating scientific activities into expedition cruises. While there are mutual benefits combining science and tourism, does not mean that production joint expeditions seamless unproblematic. We apply a practice theory approach analyse practical organisational implications practices during two enactments, with seven-year's interval, Scientific Expedition Edgeøya Svalbard (SEES), organised The Netherlands. Our results demonstrate irregularly combinations different sets require higher levels adaptivity, communicability reflectivity be reproduced successfully.

Abstract One century ago, US Secretary of State Charles Evan Hughes made the first official statement regarding policy toward Antarctica by declaring it would not recognise sovereignty in areas that could actually be settled. The Doctrine formalised opposition to countries dividing into sovereign territory, a doctrine has become bedrock upon which subsequent decisions region were built. This paper gives broad overview development Antarctica, starting with Doctrine, including period when United States secretly considered making its own claim territory before deciding champion then maintain multilateral, sovereign-free based on Antarctic Treaty order achieve national goals. also reviews how policies are working today and considers significant challenges costs incur if altered century-old Antarctica.

Abstract Antarctica and the Southern Ocean (A&SO) has a unique environment that plays an important role in Earth’s life-support systems. It no indigenous human population but hosts around 5000 researchers is visited by more than 100 000 tourists per year. In this paper, we describe biophysical processes create region’s ecosystem services, outlining their related governance systems within Antarctic Treaty System (ATS), show global distribution of service beneficiaries. These services clearly support populations across world are endangered anthropogenic activities, which current place-based ATS not empowered to control. We discuss whether it possible use insights from Elinor Ostrom’s work on managing commons, including her eight core design principles idea Common Asset Trusts, better harness efforts protect ALL services. note many existing arrangements associated with already well-aligned need be expanded globally produced A&SO.

This article explores the potential of using concrete made from a cement mixture with blast furnace slag additives for construction in Russian Arctic to promote sustainable development region. Utilizing industrial waste as recycled raw materials aligns principles green and circular economy. Recent observations have shown local symbiotic effects, such reduced material costs mitigated environmental impacts. Replacing clinkers mineral during production has been noted reduce carbon intensity final product. Further reductions greenhouse gas pollutant emissions can be achieved due long-term preservation thermal insulating properties relatively slow degradation structure. Comparative laboratory tests were conducted on samples 15% (by weight) without additives. The dynamic indicators density hardness assessed under simulated natural conditions. inclusion alters chemical reactions hardening contact air water, prolonging process, increases hardness, even frequent cycles freezing/thawing hydration/dehydration, thereby extending service life structures. obtained data extrapolated evaluate economic maintenance; accessibility, suitability, durability, resource efficiency identified key characteristics. study concludes that is feasible.
