Abstract We characterized > 150 countries’ resilience to COVID-19 as the nationwide decay rate of daily cases or deaths from peak levels. Resilience varies by a factor ~ 40 between countries for cases/capita and 25 deaths/capita. Trust within society is positively correlated with country-level COVID-19, adaptive increase in stringency government interventions when epidemic waves occur. By contrast, where governments maintain greater background tend have lower trust be less resilient. All 40% agree “most people can trusted” achieve near complete reduction new deaths, but so do several less-trusting societies. As pandemic progressed, tended decline, increases also declined. These results add evidence that improve epidemics other unexpected disruptions, which unlikely last.
