The last two decades have seen increased awareness of the impact mental health issues on population Sierra Leone. Local capacity to respond these needs is severely limited. In 2017, Ministry Health and Sanitation (MoHS) worked with staff College Medicine Allied Sciences (COMAHS – part University Leone) Queen Margaret (QMU) in Edinburgh other stakeholders, including members Mental Coalition Leone define a research agenda that would support development community-based systems community. This paper summarizes work over course following six years relation this agenda, indicates its relevance ongoing planned service developments. terms advance, studies through participatory ethnographically-informed methods identified both local idioms social determinants distress mapped seeking pathways barriers care. information was utilized validation culturally appropriate measures: Psychological Distress Scale (to assess psychosocial at community level) Perinatal identify common perinatal disorder amongst pregnant lactating mothers).
