Here we describe a new derived tyrannosaurine, Daspletosaurus wilsoni sp.nov., from Judithian strata (~76.5 Ma) intermediate in age between either of the previously described species this genus.D. displays unique combination ancestral and characteristics, including cornual process lacrimal reduced height relative to D. torosus more basal tyrannosaurines, prefrontal with long axis oriented rostrally than horneri tyrannosaurines. The description taxon provides insight into evolutionary mode Tyrannosaurinae, lending strength previous hypotheses anagenesis within increasing resolution which evolution lineage can be reconstructed.Cladistic phylogenetic methods, stratigraphy, qualitative analysis morphology relevant taxa supports an anagenetic model for origin morphological novelty genus, highlighting predominance among contemporary dinosaur lineages.

Recent years have seen increasing scientific interest in whether neuron counts can act as correlates of diverse biological phenomena. Lately, Herculano-Houzel (2023) argued that fossil endocasts and comparative neurological data from extant sauropsids allow to reconstruct telencephalic Mesozoic dinosaurs pterosaurs, which might proxies for behaviors life history traits these animals. According this analysis, large theropods such Tyrannosaurus rex were long-lived, exceptionally intelligent animals equipped with "macaque- or baboon-like cognition", whereas sauropods most ornithischian would displayed significantly smaller brains an ectothermic physiology. Besides challenging established views on dinosaur biology, claims raise questions count estimates could benefit research general. Here, we address findings by revisiting Herculano-Houzel's work, identifying several crucial shortcomings regarding analysis interpretation. We present revised encephalization dinosaurs, derive phylogenetically informed modeling amended dataset endocranial measurements. For large-bodied particular, recover lower than previously proposed. Furthermore, review the suitability variables numbers relative brain size predict cognitive complexity, metabolic rate coming conclusion they are flawed Instead relying when reconstructing argue integrative studies needed approach complex subject.

Derived ornithopods, such as hadrosaurids, show a high occurrence of fossilized lesions and diseases. However, paleopathologies in iguanodontians seem to be less common, considering the rich fossil record these taxa Europe, particular Belgium, Britain Spain. Here, we describe an iguanodontian femur discovered England that exhibits large overgrowth its lateral aspect, not previously recognized any other similar remains. The specimen was scanned with micro-computed tomography (microCT) later sectioned three sites for histological analysis. belongs early adult Iguanodontia indet., based on presence woven parallel fibered complex outer cortex four lines arrested growth. Internal analysis dome-like suggests it can diagnosed fracture callus. injury might have negatively impacted upon animal's locomotion trauma had occurred region above knee, crucial spot hindlimb musculature. Finally, cancellous medullary bone-like tissue cavity next pathological overgrowth. Abstract Identifying feeding interactions in the fossil record remains a key challenge for paleoecologists. We report rare occurrence of conical, perforative bite mark cervical vertebra an azhdarchid pterosaur, which we identified as juvenile individual Cryodrakon boreas Hone, Habib, and Therrien, 2019 from Campanian Dinosaur Park Formation Alberta, Canada. Based on comparative analysis dentition ecomorphology potential trace makers Formation, well morphology trace, most likely candidate is crocodilian, although whether it was made result scavenging or predatory behavior unknown. Feeding involving pterosaurs are globally, whereas crocodilian marks not uncommon Cretaceous terrestrial ecosystems. Given opportunistic style known range food items both extant extinct crocodilians, can be counted rare, but surprising, component at least some diets.

Abstract The Cretaceous paleocommunities of North America preserve a rich record biodiversity that suggests many species occupied narrow biogeographic ranges in comparison to their ecological equivalents extant systems. How taxa these systems partitioned niches and structured communities can be difficult determine from fossils alone, which has led variety hypotheses concerning diets habitat use. Here, we examine element ratios (Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca) the enamel suite co-occurring vertebrate sampled spatiotemporally constrained interval Oldman Formation Alberta, Canada, reconstruct trophic structure, use δ13C, δ18O, 87Sr/86Sr compositions test for niche partitioning among hadrosaurids, ceratopsids, ankylosaurs. We also previously proposed dietary troodontid theropods. In large ornithischians, find Ba/Ca Sr/Ca are consistent with herbivory, hadrosaurs distinct ceratopsids ankylosaurids ranges, pattern is indicative differences use/breadth, plant sources, feeding height. mammals, varanoid lizards, dromaeosaurids, tyrannosaurids gradient lower animal-dominant omnivorous faunivorous diets. Troodontids, have been variably hypothesized as either faunivorous, omnivorous, or herbivorous due unusual dentition, fall between those ornithischians dromaeosaurids. From multi-proxy data, interpret troodontids mixed-feeding plant-dominant omnivores. These proxies represent valuable tool understanding community ecology ecosystems hold enormous potential future research paleobiology.

Paleopathology, the study of diseases and injuries from fossil record, allows for a unique view into life prehistoric animals. Pathologies have nowadays been described in nearly all groups vertebrates, especially dinosaurs. Despite large number skeletons, pathologies had never reported sauropodomorph Plateosaurus trossingensis . Here we describe first using two individuals with chevrons tail, Upper Triassic Trossingen, SW Germany. The specimens each contain three consecutive pathological chevrons. Our results show that were caused by external trauma one individual potentially tendinous other. Healing lesions allowed survival both Using additional found other collections multiple localities, observe 14.8% within their chevrons, suggesting it was vulnerable bone.
