Research on animals in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) mainly focuses the residents with little apparent concern for animal welfare. In context of documented human welfare breaches sector question arises - how do Australian RACF approach To understand animals' lived experiences this experienced dog-trainers employment history were interviewed. These experts recruited using snowball sampling, nine participating semi-structured interviews about their experience visiting and live-in RACFs. While initial inductive coding produced six themes (residents, animals, handlers, staff, facility policy) pervasive issues noted. The outcomes a subsequent, deductive, recoding framework are reported here. Overall, focus residents, inadequate staffing, training oversight, demonstrate systemic potential compromised examples dogs being frightened one accidentally poisoned. need to develop legislation guidelines guide safe, ethical, contact RACFs discussed.
