Abstract Despite the added value of multisystem (relative to traditional single-system) approaches for characterizing biological processes linked risk psychopathology (e.g., neuroendocrine stress responsivity; Buss et al., 2019; Quas 2014), no study date has evaluated whether may serve as viable targets intervention. Utilizing a multiple-levels-of-analysis approach (Cicchetti & Dawson, 2002), this person-centered examined stress-adapted patterns hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and sympathetic-adrenomedullary (SAM) system co-activation were amenable change following Building Strong Identity Coping Skills intervention (BaSICS; Wadsworth 2022). Preadolescents exposed concentrated poverty ( n = 112, M age 11.78 years, 57.1% female, 54% assigned intervention; 40% Hispanic, 63% Black, 20% White) completed questionnaires Trier Social Stress Test at both pre- posttest. Multitrajectory modeling cortisol alpha-amylase levels identified four pretest posttest HPA-SAM profiles. At pretest, youth exhibiting Asymmetric Nos. 1 2 reported greater maladjustment relative with Symmetric co-activation. Youth No. more likely exhibit BaSICS control. Findings highlight potential restore response function in impoverished youth, pointing HPA–SAM target preventive population.

A dysregulated stress response, including exaggerated affective reactivity and abnormal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis responsivity, has been implicated in the etiology, maintenance, relapse of major depressive disorder (MDD). Among adolescents, discordant physiological response profiles have linked to negative outcomes increased risk for psychopathology. Whether these findings extend adults with varying degree MDD is unclear, as are possible links various factors.

Abstract Dante Cicchetti propelled forward the field of developmental psychopathology by advancing this framework and championing new methods, including emphasizing central role that multilevel analysis holds for explicating pathways risk resilience. His work continues to change face existing science. It has also paved way formation projects, like Research Domain Criteria initiative. This paper uses our laboratory’s on approaches studying adolescent depression, non-suicidal self-injury, suicidal thoughts behaviors shine a spotlight Dr Cicchetti’s contributions. In addition, we review recent developments, ongoing challenges, promising future directions within as endeavor carry tradition growth in field.
