One in three children the United States is exposed to insecure housing conditions, including unaffordable, inconsistent, and unsafe housing. These exposures have detrimental impacts on youth mental health. Delineating neurobehavioral pathways linking exposure insecurity with children's health has potential inform interventions policy. However, approaching this work, carefully considering lived experiences of families essential translating scientific discovery improve outcomes an equitable representative way. In current paper, we provide introduction range stressful that may face when conditions. Next, highlight findings from early-life stress literature regarding consequences housing, focusing how unpredictability associated neural circuitry supporting cognitive emotional development. We then delineate community-engaged research (CEnR) approaches been leveraged understand effects health, propose future directions integrate developmental neuroscience CEnR maximize impact work. conclude by outlining practice policy recommendations aim

Abstract Greater unpredictability in childhood from the level of caregiver-child dyad to broader family, home, or environmental instability is consistently associated with disruptions cognitive, socioemotional, behavioral, and biological development humans. These findings are bolstered by experimental research non-human animal models suggesting that early life an important signal developing organism shapes neurodevelopment behavior. Research on has surged past several years, guided part theoretical grounding developmental psychopathology framework (shaped largely Dr. Dante Cicchetti’s innovative work). The current review focuses future directions for research, including probing intergenerational effects, role predictability resilience, cultural contextual considerations, novel outcomes should be tested relation unpredictability. We urge integration multidisciplinary perspectives collaborations into also provide ideas translating this real-world practice policy encourage high-quality testing whether incorporating interventions improves outcomes, which would support further dissemination these findings.

Abstract Early-life adversity is pervasive worldwide and represents a potent risk factor for increased mental health burden across the lifespan. However, there substantial individual heterogeneity in associations between exposure, neurobiological changes, problems. Accounting key features of such as developmental timing exposure may clarify adversity, neurodevelopment, health. The present study leverages sparse canonical correlation analysis to characterize modes covariation age integrity white matter tracts throughout brain sample 107 adults. We find that during middle childhood (ages 5-6 8-9 particular) consistently linked with alterations tract integrity, supporting sensorimotor functions display higher relation while cortico-cortical communication lower integrity. Further, latent patterns experienced preschool 4-9) were associated trauma-related symptoms adulthood. Our findings underscore differentially affect function- developmental-timing specific manner suggest ages 4-9 shape development global ways are relevant adult
