ABSTRACT Are LGBTQ legislators effective lawmakers? We build on theories that link voter discrimination to legislative effectiveness by arguing voters’ biases against candidates narrow the candidate pool, leading election of only most experienced and qualified candidates. As a result this electoral selection effect, we expect will be more lawmakers than their non-LGBTQ counterparts. To test this, combine data state legislators’ identification with State Legislative Effectiveness Scores (SLES). Our findings reveal are meaningfully legislators. our discrimination, leverage over-time variation in toward individuals. Across four tests, consistently find elected high-discrimination environments those from less discriminatory environments.
