The COVID-19 pandemic has called for the increased use of disinfectants worldwide in public facilities, transportation, hospitals, nursing homes, wastewater treatment and even common households to mitigate virus burden. Active ingredients recommended against viruses include chemicals such as quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), hydrogen peroxide, bleach (sodium hypochlorite), alcohols. These disinfecting differ their structures, properties, modes action, environmental behaviors, effects on human health upon exposure. Humans can be exposed mainly through dermal absorption, inhalation, ingestion. total exposure relative contribution each route vary considerably among disinfectants. QACs have been linked occupational illnesses asthma an risk chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), whereas excess bleach, or alcohol-based cause respiratory damage developing controlling asthma. Recent studies showed that presence blood associated with changes biomarkers increase inflammatory cytokines, decreased mitochondrial function, disruption cholesterol homeostasis a dose-dependent manner. Therefore, repeated during raised questions exposure-related long-term risks safety. Furthermore, lieu lack adequate knowledge awareness, these frequently used porous surfaces, including fabrics/textiles consumer plastics cloth facemasks, which disinfectant chemical residues may persist longer duration, causing potential degradation plastic materials, releasing additives, shedding microplastics. In addition, subsequent discharge into adverse impacts aquatic ecosystems, accumulation vegetables, contamination food chain via irrigation sludge application. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) discharged from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have attracted increasing concerns because of their potential risks to aquatic ecosystems. The identification the structures OPEs is a prerequisite for subsequent assessment environmental impacts, which could hardly be accomplished using traditional target analytical methods. In this study, we describe use suspect and nontarget screening techniques organophosphate triesters diesters (tri-OPEs di-OPEs) in influent effluent samples acquired 25 municipal WWTPs across China. There are totally 33 different OPE molecules identified, 11 detected first time 4 new public. all tested samples, di-OPEs account significant portion (53% on average) total (ng/L−μg/L). More importantly, most not eliminated after these WWTPs, while some even accumulate. research priority based ecological risk was also analyzed, results reflected previously unrecognized exposure emerging living organisms. These findings present holistic understanding relevance country scale, will hopefully provide guidance upgrade protocols modification governmental regulations future.

Intensified disinfection of wastewater during the COVID-19 pandemic increased release toxic by-products (DBPs). However, studies relating to ecological impacts DBPs on aquatic environment remain insufficient. In this study, we comparatively investigated toxicities and risks 17 typical, halogenated three trophic levels organisms in freshwater ecosystem, including phytoplankton (Scenedesmus sp.), zooplankton (Daphnia magna), fish (Danio rerio). Toxicity was found be species-specific: Scenedesmus sp. most sensitive haloacetic acids, while D. magna haloacetonitriles trihalomethanes. Specific each DBP, were also related their classes substituted halogen atoms. Damage photosystems oxidative stress served as potential mechanisms for toxicity microalgae. The different sensitivities indicate that a battery bioassays with at is necessary determine ecotoxicity DBPs. Furthermore, assessed by calculating risk quotients (RQs) based data from multiple bioassays. cumulative RQs all greater than 1.0, indicating high effluents.

Single-use face masks are a powerful tool for reducing the spread of COVID-19. The usage single-use has increased enormously since start COVID-19 pandemic, and pollution from huge volume discarded may become an environmental issue. This study focuses on synthetic antioxidants (AOs), including phenolic (SPAs) organophosphite (OPAs), used in three-layer masks. Both SPAs OPAs were detected masks, with total concentrations ranging 20.0 to 575 μg/g (median 175 μg/g). dominant congeners tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphite (AO168, median 83.2 μg/g), phosphate (AO168O, 72.9 pentaerythritol tetrakis[3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate] (AO1010, 13.7 No significant concentration difference was observed between medical nonmedical Among three different layers middle showed highest AO concentrations. On basis detected, we estimate that 1084 tons AOs is annually, suggesting be source environment. first report occurrence wide range

Wastewater-based surveillance of the COVID-19 pandemic holds great promise; however, a point-of-use detection method for SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater is lacking. Here, portable paper device based on CRISPR/Cas12a and reverse-transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) with excellent sensitivity specificity was developed wastewater. Three primer sets RT-LAMP guide RNAs (gRNAs) that could lead Cas12a to recognize target genes via base pairing were used perform high-fidelity detect N, E, S SARS-CoV-2. Due trans-cleavage activity after amplicon recognition, carboxyfluorescein-ssDNA-Black Hole Quencher-1 carboxyfluorescein-ssDNA-biotin probes adopted realize different visualization pathways fluorescence or lateral flow analysis, respectively. The reactions integrated into simultaneously detecting limits (LODs) 25, 310, 10 copies/mL, achieved semiquantitative analysis from 0 310 copies/mL due LODs three genes. Blind experiments demonstrated suitable 97.7% 82% accuracy. This first endpoint LODs, demonstrating promising wastewater-based surveillance.

Disinfection by-products (DBPs), a kind of secondary pollutant derived from water disinfection treatment, are frequently detected in the urban cycle and reported to show (eco)toxicological impacts on aquatic systems human health. Thus, DBPs have become ubiquitous environmental contaminants emerging concern. This article reviews DBP characteristics as well occurrence different aqueous environments, namely reclaimed wastewater, surface drinking water. Furthermore, this review discusses research related fate removal wastewater-derived components cycle, including advanced treatment facilities, natural systems, plants, distribution plumbing household processes. In general, under influence internal factors (i.e. physicochemical properties other individual DBP) external (e.g., composition conditions processes, characteristic quality). As for future needs, identification monitoring development predictive models significance effectively assess mitigate impact ecological safety Besides, addition system, should also pay attention air terrestrial ecosystem.
