Daily Monitoring at a Full-Scale Wastewater Treatment Plant Reveals Temporally Variable Micropollutant Biotransformations DOI

Despite decades of micropollutant (MP) monitoring at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), we lack a fundamental understanding the time-varying metabolic processes driving MP biotransformations. To address this knowledge gap, collected 24-h composite samples from influent and effluent conventional activated sludge (CAS) process WWTP over 14 consecutive days. We used liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry to (i) quantify 184 MPs in CAS process; (ii) characterize temporal dynamics removal biotransformation rate constants; (iii) discover biotransformations linked temporally variable constants. measured 120 least one sample 66 every sample. While man-made chemicals in the environment are ubiquitous and a potential threat to human health ecosystem integrity, environmental fate of chemical contaminants such as pharmaceuticals is often poorly understood. Biodegradation processes driven by microbial communities convert into transformation products (TPs) that may themselves have adverse ecological effects. The detection TPs formed during biodegradation has been continuously improved thanks development TP prediction algorithms analytical workflows. Here, we contribute this advance (i) reviewing past applications identification workflows, (ii) applying an updated workflow for 42 experiments with activated sludge, (iii) benchmarking 5 different pathway models, comprising 4 models trained on datasets provided enviPath, state-of-the-art EAWAG system. Using workflow, could tentatively identify 79 31 pharmaceutical compounds. Compared previous works, further automatized several steps were previously performed hand. By enviPath system experimental data, demonstrate usefulness tool generate suspect lists screening, propose new avenues improve their accuracy.
