ABSTRACT Groundwater biogeochemistry in coastal areas is spatially and temporally dynamic because fluctuations groundwater level may cause alternate redox between distinct hydrological conditions. Recent studies have proposed connections large-scale processes, specifically focusing on the role of redox-active compounds changing oxidation state during flooding draining events. While water saturation generally results a shift from electron donors to acceptors, specific mechanisms underlying transition oxidizing reducing conditions response are uncertain. To determine effects levels dynamics, we monitored potential across terrestrial-aquatic interface Lake Erie throughout high low-water seasons. In contrast previously observed responses soils, our revealed patterns potentials high-water periods. Furthermore, short-term table significantly impacted when dissolved oxygen increased, dynamics displayed voltage hysteresis most Based these findings, propose that for improved predictions microbial functions biogeochemical cycles, redox-informed models should incorporate antagonistic changes balance compared soils consider time lags fluctuations. Coastal aquifers are hydraulically connected to the sea and a storm (cyclone/hurricane) can disrupt surface water-groundwater (SW-GW) interaction process which is largely unexplored. Thus, this study aims explore impact of surges (both positive negative) on coastal aquifers, focusing pollutant mobilization, groundwater level (GWL) fluctuations, solute concentration (Salinity, Cl) subsequent re-stabilization based pre-existing studies from coast USA India through systematic review process. The outcome revealed that there relationship between cyclonic speed, rainfall, surge height GWL in lithologically conductive aquifers. Positive raises GWL, salinity transportation contaminants into while negative induces fall salinity, accelerates submarine discharge exports contaminants/nutrients sea. restabilization SW-GW dynamics case dependent, takes week month years, dependent local hydrogeology intensity storm. So, recommends prioritizing safeguard otherwise increasing storms will lead questions freshwater sustainability ecosystems present climate change scenario.

Understanding the dynamics of arsenic species (As(V) and As(III)) in water is crucial for mitigating their significant health risks. Here, we demonstrate exceptional ability chalcopyrite minerals to convert As(V) into As(III), achieve 100% removal over a broad range concentrations (0.005–50 mg/L). This unique process combines adsorption with photocatalytic redox reactions, where first adsorbed on mineral surface then reduced As(III) by photogenerated electrons. Density functional theory calculations reveal "Cu(I)–Fe(III) redox-couple" within as key driver this efficient photocatalysis. redox-couple exhibits excellent light absorption excitation dynamics, facilitating rapid transfer electrons Fe site reduction. research unveils previously unknown pathway reduction natural environment, potentially impacting our comprehension global geochemical cycle toxic As element.

The distribution of trace metals (TMs) in a continuous water body often exhibits watershed attributes, but the tidal gates coastal rivers may alter their transformation and accumulation patterns. Therefore, gate-controlled river was selected to test risks Al, As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Sr, Zn catchment area (CA), estuarine (EA), offshore (OA). Associations between TMs bacterial communities were analyzed assess feasibility using parameters as ecological indicators. results showed that As Cr key pollutants due higher enrichment factor geoaccumulation index, reaching slight moderate pollution levels. Nemero index highest EAs (14.93), indicating risk sediments near tide gates. Although TM dynamics can be explained by metal-indicating effects Fe they have no linear relationships with toxic metals. Interestingly, metabolic abundance good correlations different sediment. These highlight community characteristics effective biomarkers for assessing practical tools managing control environment.
