Background: There is growing international recognition of the need for improvements to national chemical management systems hazardous chemicals. The European Union has recently introduced concept 'essential uses' as a new approach chemicals by limiting their uses. Objectives: This paper examines essential uses in and how apply it through case study use. This distinct from current system, but seeks improve its potential benefits effectively restricting or gradually decreasing use substances. Methods:The was reviewing Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete Ozone Layer, Cousins's three essentiality categories applied PFAS, restriction options assessed PFAS proposal under REACH, California Safer Consumer Products regulations prioritizing 6PPD motor vehicle tires.Based these concepts 6PPD, benzene were classified accordance with products using South Korea. Results:The able manage authorization substances concern non-essential feasible substitution substances. Conclusions: If methodology are clearly established, they can be expected shift paradigm regulating existing substance system.
