Subsea power cables cause electromagnetic fields (EMFs) into the marine environment. Elasmobranchs (rays, skates, sharks) are particularly sensitive to EMFs as they use electromagnetic-receptive sensory systems for orientation, navigation, and locating conspecifics or buried prey. Cables may intersect with egg laying sites, mating, pupping, nursery grounds, foraging habitat migration routes of elasmobranchs effects encountering on species largely unknown. Demonstrated behavioural attraction, disturbance indifference, depending EMF characteristics, exposed life stage, exposure level duration. We estimated levels subsea cable EMFs, based modelled magnetic in Dutch Continental Shelf compared these reported elasmobranch sensitivity ranges experimental effect levels. conclude that risk from has a large uncertainty varies per stage ecology. Based no-observed (from 10−3 10−1 μT) we discuss what will probably be most affected six common benthic Southern North Sea. then identify critical knowledge gaps reducing assessments elasmobranchs.

The rapid expansion of offshore wind energy requires effective monitoring to balance renewable development with environmental and marine spatial planning. This study proposes a novel farm detection methodology integrating Sentinel-1 SAR time series, time-shift augmentation strategy, semantic-to-instance segmentation transformation. consists (1) constructing dataset farms labeled from (2) applying strategy by randomizing image sequences during training (avoiding overfitting due chronological ordering), (3) evaluating six deep learning architectures (U-Net, U-Net++, LinkNet, DeepLabv3+, FPN, SegFormer) across time-series lengths 1, 5, 10, 15 images, (4) converting the semantic results into instance-level detections using Geographic Information System tools. show that increasing length 1 images significantly improves performance, Intersection over Union 63.29% 81.65% F-score 77.52% 89.90%, best model (LinkNet). Also, models trained achieved 25% higher IoU an 18% than those without it. transformation 99.7% overall quality in per-object evaluation, highlighting effectiveness our approach.

Abstract Understanding the effects of artificial structures in marine landscapes is required for ecosystem-based management. Global demand oil and gas accelerated commitments to renewable energy development has led proliferation structures. Investigating cumulative these on ecosystems requires data benthic community over large geographical long-time scales. It imperative share collected by many stakeholders an integrated information system benefit science, industry policy. BISAR first product containing harmonised quality-checked international benthos from North Sea. was compiled environmental impact assessment studies scientific projects (3864 samples, 890 taxa). The Belgian Continental Shelf is a highly used part of the North Sea, where many different maritime activities thrive, such as shipping, fishing and energy production. Offshore wind in particular has gained importance region concessions zones are allowed to be combined with aquaculture activities. It unclear what environmental impact multi-use is, from life-cycle perspective, there potential create synergies value chains, how similar compares currently alternatives. Therefore, this study performs Life Cycle Assessment on combination full scale existing farm mussel design. When analyzing net results offshore at level three areas protection, i.e. human health, ecosystem quality natural resources, it shows that contributes relatively most impacts, while majority avoided burdens attributed farm. Mainly supply chain materials required manufacture its components followed by operational contribute footprint. Moreover, taking advantage joint activities, transport between during (Scenario 1) decommissioning phase 2) did not show significant reduction overall impacts life cycle assessment furthermore compared relevant terrestrial benchmarks Belgium, nuclear pork meat While have high burden area protection due water land use requirements, mainly remaining health again consequence chain. This reveals farms terms sustainability, offering valuable insights policy-makers actors, generally well-informed decision-making.
