The fate of antimony (Sb) is strongly affected by adsorption, yet Sb isotope fractionation and the associated mechanism have not been widely reported. Here we experimentally investigated process Sb(V) adsorption on iron (oxyhydr)oxides effects. occurs during (Δ123Sbsolution–mineral = 1.20 ± 0.02‰ for ferrihydrite 2.35 0.04‰ goethite). Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis shows that via inner-sphere surface complexation, including mononuclear bidentate edge-sharing (2E) binuclear corner-sharing (2C) complexes. A longer atom distance Sb–Fe in leads to less than goethite. Gibbs free energy Mayer bond order were calculated based density functional theory (DFT) suggested strength bonding environment can be summarized as Sb(OH)6– > 2E 2C. In turn, indicates process. This study reveals onto (oxyhydr)oxides, providing a basis future isotopes further understanding mechanism.

Stable isotope ratios of antimony (Sb) in the environment can provide valuable information about sources and processes such as redox transformations. To investigate fractionation when Sb(V) is chemically reduced by sulfide to Sb(III), experiments with 0.008 0.01 mM 0.009 6 at a pH 1 8 were performed. Experiments precipitated Sb-sulfide, whereas 7 8, Sb(III) remained solution. The product was enriched lighter isotope. isotopic (ε ≈ δinstantaneous – δreactant) for experiment −1.42 ± 0.04‰, those 5 ranged from −0.46 0.04 −0.62 0.04‰. small magnitude observed circumneutral may decrease utility Sb measurement reduction indicators natural systems, adsorption has been shown fractionate isotopes same direction similar (up 1.14‰) (Wasserman, 2020; Zhou et al., 2023).
