An alternative metric to account for particulate matter (PM) composition-based toxicity is the ability of PM-species generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and deplete antioxidants, so-called oxidative potential (OP). Acellular OP assays are most used worldwide, mainly those based on ascorbic acid (AA) dithiothreitol (DTT) depletion; values calculated from AA/DTT concentration over time kinetic curves. Since a great variability in OP-DTT OP-AA can be found literature, understanding factors affecting rate AA DTT oxidation presence PM-bound will improve interpretation values. In this work, study driven by usually PM (transition metals naphthoquinone (NQ)) was carried out. particular, influence Cu(II), Fe(II), Fe(III), Mn(II), Mn(III), 1,4-NQ, type fluid assay (phosphate buffer (PB), phosphate saline (PBS) artificial lysosomal (ALF)) analysed discussed. The reaction orders with respect active compound, constants were also determined. results show among studied depending used; mostly higher PB0.05M, followed PBS1x ALF. Moreover, different concentration-responses OP-DTT/OP-AA obtained. These differences explained obtained each compound fluid.

Trace element is known to be one major component in determining particulate matter (PM) toxicities. However, there still no accurate assessment of the toxic potency mixed valences. Here, we reported oxidative stress and cytotoxicity potencies 14 trace elements their various valence states estimated gaps inorganic PM resulting from variations Substantial discrepancies up 3 orders magnitude were observed among different When considering abundance PM, toxicity are range 5 6 times between greatest weakest emitted industrial sources, with iron contributing 65.5%–91.0% overall gaps. Furthermore, relative variation shows a significant correlation additive toxicities Fe(II) Fe(III) ions during aging process. The finding highlights that multiple coexisting need taken into account when estimating potencies.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) comprises the majority of submicron particles and is important for air pollution, health, climate. When SOA mixes with inorganic containing transition metals (e.g., Fe), chemical reactions altering physicochemical properties can occur. Here, we study Fe's impact on formation composition formed via dark α-pinene ozonolysis either (NH

It is urgent to exploit multifunctional materials and combined approaches for efficient antitumor effects. Copper-based metal–organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) have excellent performances in catalysis, biocompatibility, photothermal conversion, regulate metabolism, which make them attract more attention application. Therefore, this review, representative ligands, synthetic methods, mechanism, applications of Cu-MOFs were provided. Special emphasis placed on the recent drug carriers, therapy, tumor imaging, theranostic, are summarized with examples. Finally, we presented dilemma faced by offered a new perspective future Hopefully, review may serve as reference further development application Cu-MOFs.

Exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM) has been attributed millions of deaths annually. However, the PM components responsible for observed health effects remain unclear. Oxidative potential (OP) gained increasing attention as a key property that may explain toxicity. Using online measurement methods impinge particles OP quantification within seconds, we reveal 60 99% reactive oxygen species (ROS) and in secondary organic aerosol combustion-generated have lifetime minutes hours ROS activity ambient decays substantially before offline analysis. This implies current underestimate true PM. We demonstrate short-lived activate different toxicity pathways upon direct deposition onto reconstituted human bronchial epithelia. Therefore, suggest future air pollution studies should include quantification, allowing more accurate assessments links between effects.

Abstract. Air pollution is one of the largest environmental health risks and leading causes adverse outcomes mortality worldwide. The possible importance oxidative potential (OP) as a metric to quantify particle toxicity in air increasingly being recognised. In this work, OP reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity particles from fresh aged petrol passenger car emissions residential wood combustion (RWC) were investigated using two novel instruments. Applying online instruments an ascorbic acid (AA) 2′,7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein (DCFH) assay provides much higher temporal resolution compared with traditional filter-based methods allows for new insights into highly dynamic changes ROS these sources. Due efficiency particulate filter Euro 6d car, almost no primary emitted and, thus, or was detected exhaust. However, substantial ROSs observed after photochemical ageing due formation secondary particles. Increasing also when comparing RWC emissions. Overall, had signals This suggests that could be major contributor may intrinsically more harmful emission source than exhaust, although still high. These measurements illustrate strong differences nature toxicity-relevant properties sources contribute efficient mitigation policies.

There is a need for monitoring air pollution associated with black carbon (BC) using passive monitor required in remote areas where the measurements are absent. In this pilot study, we developed quantitative method to determine dry deposition submicron BC dual-wavelength ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. Furthermore, measured levels of on plant leaves from 30 species located urban Nanjing established method. The oxidative potential as bio-monitoring samplers was assessed. concentrations tree varied 0.01 1.6 mg m−2. Significant differences across different types were observed. values deposited particles leaf samples observed be range 33–46 nmol min−1 mg−1 dithiothreitol (DTT) assay and 18–32 ascorbic acid (AA) assay, respectively. comparison, BC-dominated mass water extracts 5–35 DTT 2 12 AA We found variations OP not large, while terms greatly. These results indicate that spectroscopy could provide simple tool monitor.
