Despite advancements in high-resolution screening techniques, the identification of novel perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remains challenging without prior structural information. In view this, we proposed implemented a new data-driven algorithm to calculate spectral similarity among PFAS, facilitating generation molecular networks screen for unknown compounds. Using this approach, 81 PFAS across 12 distinct classes were identified soil samples collected near an industrial park Shandong Province, China, including first reported occurrence iodine-substituted PFAS. Among them, standards four polyfluorinated ether sulfonates (I-PFESA) successfully synthesized, enabling confirmation subsequent quantitative analysis. Although median concentration ∑I-PFESA (0.74 ng/g dw) was lower than that ∑H-PFESA (hydrogen-substituted, 61.96 ∑Cl-PFESA (chlorine-substituted, 2.98 dw), embryotoxicity assays zebrafish revealed 6:2 I-PFESA exhibited greater toxicity compared Cl-PFESA same chain length. This highlights need closer examination toxic effects I-PFESA. Abstract Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) are used globally as a key component of clean and sustainable energy infrastructure, emerging LiB technologies have incorporated class per- polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) known bis-perfluoroalkyl sulfonimides (bis-FASIs). Amidst tightening regulations, the proliferation of next-generation per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) necessitates a deeper understanding their environmental fate potential risks. Here, we conducted comprehensive assessment PFAS in water sediment Taihu Lake, incorporating both nontarget target screening, seasonal geographical variation analysis, risk prioritization. A total 58 from 13 classes were identified, revealing complex contamination. In addition to short-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCAs) sulfonates (PFSAs), bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (Ntf2) perfluoro-2,5-dimethyl-3,6-dioxo-heptanoic acid (C7 HFPO-TA) exhibited relatively high concentrations water, with median values 21.7 5.72 ng/L, respectively. Seasonal analysis revealed elevated levels C7 HFPO-TA, Ntf2, perfluorohexanoic (PFHxA) northeastern areas, suggesting transport via diversion project. Multicriteria prioritization identified four priority (Ntf2, PFHxA, perfluorooctanoic (PFOA)) two (hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer (HFPO-DA) PFHxA) sediment. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a large group of anthropogenic fluorinated chemicals. Ultrashort-chain perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) have recently gained attention due to their prevalence in the environment increasing environmental concerns. In this review, we established literature database from 1990 2024, encompassing biological concentrations (>3,500 concentration records) five historically overlooked ultrashort-chain PFAAs (perfluoroalkyl carboxylic sulfonic with less than 4 carbons): trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), perfluoropropanoic (PFPrA), trifluoromethanesulfonic (TFMS), perfluoroethanesulfonate (PFEtS), perfluoropropanesulfonate (PFPrS). Our data mining analysis reveal that (1) globally distributed various environments including water bodies, solid matrices, air, usually higher those longer-chain compounds; (2) TFA, most extensively studied PFAA, shows consistent upward trend surface water, rainwater, air over past three decades; (3) present organisms, plants, wildlife, human blood, serum, urine, sometimes similar compounds. The current state knowledge regarding sources fate TFA other is also reviewed. Amid global urgency regulate PFASs, particularly as countries worldwide intensified such efforts, critical review will inform scientific research regulatory policies.
