Enhancement of Nitrogen Removal in Constructed Wetlands Through Boron Mud and Elemental Sulfur Addition: Regulation of Sulfur and Oxygen Cycling DOI

Constructed wetlands (CWs) utilizing elemental sulfur (S0) as an electron donor are effective for nitrate (NO3--N) removal from low C/N wastewater. However, limited bioavailability of chemical S0 (chem-S0) due to water solubility and inadequate mass transfer impedes complete denitrification. In this study, boron mud waste (S0&BM) were processed combined enable the conversion chem-S0 biological (bio-S0) in CWs. The employment S0&BM improved NO3--N total nitrogen (TN) rates by 15.36% 10.55% compared alone. 15N isotope tracing experiment unveiled pathways N2O production demonstrated that facilitated full denitrification, resulting a higher percentage being degraded non-polluting form (54.70%). Releasing trace amounts magnesium mitigated excessive acidification caused autotrophic process promoted biofilm formation, thereby pronouncing vertical oxygen fluctuations. Meanwhile, vacancies generated closed-loop cycle, including oxidation sulfate (SO42-), reduction SO42- sulphide (S2-), final S2- bio-S0. enriched functional microbial communities related transformation. Functional gene analysis showed increased narG, nirS, norB, nosZ genes supporting dsrA sqr responsible cycle exhibited highest abundance. This realization allowed utilization materials treatment, enhancing energy efficiency carbon pollution
