Sea spray aerosols (SSA) greatly affect the climate system by scattering solar radiation and acting as seeds for cloud droplet formation. The ecosystems in Arctic Ocean are rapidly changing due to global warming, effects these changes have on generation of SSA, thereby clouds fog formation this region, unknown. During ship-based Century Expedition, we examined dependency forced SSA production biogeochemical characteristics seawater using an on-board temperature-controlled aerosol chamber with a plunging jet system. Our results indicate that mainly salinity organic content influence size distribution SSA. However, observed 2-fold higher from waters similar collected north 81°N compared samples south latitude. This variability was not explained phytoplankton bacterial abundances or Chlorophyll-a concentration but presence glucose seawater. synergic action sea salt (essential component) glucose-rich saccharides (enhancer) accounts >80% predictability throughout cruise. suggest besides wind speed salinity, is also affected specific organics released microbiota.

Abstract Increased accessibility of liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) metabolomics instrumentation and software have expanded their use in studies dissolved organic matter (DOM) exometabolites released by microbes. Current strategies to annotate metabolomes generally rely on matching tandem MS/MS spectra databases authentic standards. However, spectral approaches typically low annotation rates for DOM. An alternative approach is molecular formula based accurate isotopic fine structure measurements that can be obtained from state-of-the-art ultrahigh resolution Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance (FT-ICR-MS), but instrument large metabolomic limited. Here, we describe a strategy exometabolomes lower LC-MS systems features library generated representative sample analyzed LC-21T FT-ICR MS. The successfully annotated 53% exometabolome the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum – nearly ten-fold increase over 6% rate achieved using conventional approach. There was 94% agreement between assigned were with both approaches, error analysis discrepancies suggested MS assignments more reliable. Differences P. grown under iron replete limited conditions revealed 668 significant metabolites, including suite peptide-like molecules response deficiency. These findings demonstrate utility libraries extending accuracy comprehensiveness metabolome annotations.
