Ubiquitous
microplastics
(MPs)

affect

efficiency

anaerobic
membrane
bioreactors
(AMBR)

wastewater
treatment

energy
recovery

inhibiting
metabolic
activity

transfer

Nano/microplastics
(NPs/MPs)

commonly
found
in
sewage
sludge,
which
leads
to
their
unavoidable
introduction
into
anaerobic
bioreactors
used
for
the
fermentation
or
digestion
of
sludge
bioenergy
recovery
processes.
This
results
oxidative
stress
on
microbiome,
ultimately
hindering
energy
recovery.
study
investigates
efficacy
biochar
(BC)
and
granular
activated
carbon
(GAC)
enhancing
dark
hydrogen
primary
while
mitigating
inhibitory
effects
polystyrene
nanoplastics
(PsNPs).
Comprehensive
analyses
included
volatile
fatty
acid
production,
microbial
community,
toxicity,
reactive
oxygen
species
(ROS)
generation,
dewaterability.

PsNPs,

enhancement

biohydrogen
production

GAC
