Nano/microplastics (NPs/MPs) are commonly found in sewage sludge, which leads to their unavoidable introduction into anaerobic bioreactors used for the fermentation or digestion of sludge bioenergy recovery processes. This results oxidative stress on microbiome, ultimately hindering energy recovery. study investigates efficacy biochar (BC) and granular activated carbon (GAC) enhancing dark hydrogen primary while mitigating inhibitory effects polystyrene nanoplastics (PsNPs). Comprehensive analyses included volatile fatty acid production, microbial community, toxicity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, dewaterability. For without PsNPs, highest enhancement (22.4% over control) biohydrogen production was obtained 5 g/L BC. However, GAC performed better than BC by achieving (64.3%) reducing ROS toxicity from PsNPs. The abundance Firmicutes BC- GAC-amended reactors linked higher yields. Also, significantly reduced prolonged capillary suction times observed PsNPs-containing reactors, demonstrating effectiveness These findings demonstrate potential carbonaceous additives, such as GAC, deliver multiple benefits, including boosting

Ubiquitous microplastics (MPs) severely affect the efficiency of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AMBR) for wastewater treatment and energy recovery by inhibiting metabolic activity microorganisms. The electrochemical system can not only accelerate waste metabolism but also improve microbial resistance promoting interspecies electron transfer within system, which has broad application potential in remediation MPs wastewater. This paper attempts to evaluate effect electrical stimulation on biological processes containing employing an coupled bioreactor (ECAMBR). results showed that although MP exposure inhibited methanogenic performance, effectively alleviated this inhibitory effect. Further analysis increased cell damage affected enzyme activity, could stress response microorganisms, leading changes their viability activities. 16S-rRNA sequencing indicated highest abundance hydrolytic–acidogenic bacteria Firmicutes Bacteroidota was found at phylum level, whereas genus it Christensenellaceae_R-7_group, methanogens were dominated Methylomonas, Methyloversatilis, Methylobacter. Functional prediction carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid dominant pathways enhance study demonstrated important role high concentrations MPs.
