The widespread application of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) resulted in ubiquitous environmental contamination. Consumption a single portion (125 g) containing Σ 4PFAS would result 36.6-fold exceedance tolerable weekly intake (TWI) EFSA 70 kg-person. accumulation (calculated as tissue/plasma ratio) perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids with ηpfc 8-13 lung, spleen, increased molecule size, indicating passive mechanisms driven hydrophobicity. In contrast, coefficients scattered, additional involvement chain-length dependent active transport processes. observed PFOS (median ratio 18.0). shortest included study (PFHxA, PFHpA, PFOA, PFBS PFHxS) did not accumulate any tissues, probably due to strong binding blood proteins like serum albumin their relative polarity impeding membrane diffusion.
