Abstract Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis is a technique for detecting organisms based on genetic material in environments such as air, water, or soil. Observed eDNA concentrations vary space and time due to biological environmental processes. Here, we investigate variability production loss by sampling water adjacent managed population of non‐native cetaceans near‐hourly timescale 48 hr. We used diverse approaches modeling methods describe observed then compare the magnitude mechanisms. parsed conceptual box model compared physical rates using decay experiment transport‐and‐diffusion tracer model. evaluated along transect away from animal enclosure light parameter estimates. conclude that best conceptualized time‐varying mixed‐state model, losses are small relative marine environment. Because unsteady nonlinear, models especially helpful tools estimate it accurately.
