Persistent pollutants in the ocean impact safety of seafood. Many emerging and legacy persistent organic (POPs) have been disposed into world's oceans, exemplified by recent discovery large amounts halogenated pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) waste waters Southern California. The biological mechanisms governing persistence trophic transfer marine seafood species remain incompletely understood. Xenobiotic transporters, such as P-glycoprotein (P-gp), are present all organisms prevent accumulation toxic chemicals. Our previous work has demonstrated that can act inhibitors human murine P-gp transporters interacting with their binding site impeding transport. Using cryo-EM, we determined molecular interactions DDT from yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares). results reveal conformation transporter samples multiple degrees widening absence substrate. We also show binds a singular, wide inward-facing could inhibit transport cycle. This inhibition may contribute to bioaccumulation tuna. study highlights capacity at points food chain this critical mechanism.

Contaminants are transported into estuaries during rainfall events, impacting the physiology of harvested species, and thereby threatening fisheries sustainability. Decapod crustaceans among most economically important groups from estuaries, but at high risk contaminant exposure. We conducted a systematic review meta-analysis evaluating physiological responses estuarine decapods to contaminants flooding. A total 138 research articles were identified, with global effort corresponding geographic distribution crustacean harvesting. From these studies, 305 acute toxicity values for metals pesticide chemical classes extracted 341 sublethal effect sizes (log-response ratios; LnRRs) calculated using 91 measures across seven response categories. At environmentally relevant concentrations, exposure various metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons consistently elicited negative effects on decapod (LnRR range: -0.67 -0.07). Key processes impacted by included nutritional condition, osmoregulation, oxidative stress defences, acetylcholinesterase activity, metabolism growth -0.73 -0.1), general trend greater later in ontogeny. With new agricultural industrial chemicals continually being marketed, our highlights need regulatory testing species prior registration use catchment areas. Under future climatic variability, may be increasingly exposed contaminants, implications food security.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs), characterized by their high mobility and environmental persistence, bioaccumulation, trophic transfer. Considering the highly migratory nature longevity of whale shark, this species can be considered as an early warning bioindicator regional contamination from marine environment. This work investigated concentration twenty OCPs in thirty shark skin biopsies, collected between 2014 2015 Bahía La Paz (Gulf California, Mexico). Mean detected OCP levels were 33.99 ± 105.23 ng/g dw (dry weight), ΣChlordane, ΣDrin, ΣHCH showed highest concentrations. Statistically differences mean not found sex size. PC1 PC2 accounted for 68.1% 16.1% total variance, respectively. The presence higher some than corresponding metabolites suggests recent applications related to agricultural activity surrounding areas Baja California peninsula.
