AbstractMicroplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants that adversely affect environmental health. In this review, we discuss the uptake of MPs by plants via endocytosis and crack-entry pathways in roots stomata leaves; translocation xylem phloem; toxicity to diverse plant species through oxidative stress, inhibition photosynthesis, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity. It's difficult assess health risks because they directly cause also change soil properties bioavailability coexisting pollutants, such as plastic additives, rhizosphere, bioaccumulate along food chain. Moreover, compared behavior phytotoxicity effects laboratory hydroponic studies, various shapes, sizes, types likely different on complex natural environments. This review proposes potential phytoremediation strategies, including phytoextraction, immobilization, rhizoremediation, for MP pollutants provides guidelines bioremediation MP-contaminated environments enhance sustainability. pollution, selection disposal used optimization functional microbes rhizosphere remain challenging. Future studies should address knowledge gaps (i) methods determining environmentally-relevant concentrations MPs, (ii) assessment ecological human environment, (iii) development effective strategies pollution. Keywords: Emerging contaminantenvironmental healthplastic additiverhizosphere effectsoil propertyuptakeHandling Editors: Chang-Ping Yu Lena Q. Plastics are now omnipresent in our daily lives. The existence of microplastics (1 µm to 5 mm length) and possibly even nanoplastics (<1 μm) has recently raised health concerns. In particular, believed be more toxic since their smaller size renders them much amenable, compared microplastics, enter the human body. However, detecting imposes tremendous analytical challenges on both nano-level sensitivity plastic-identifying specificity, leading a knowledge gap this mysterious nanoworld surrounding us. To address these challenges, we developed hyperspectral stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) imaging platform with an automated plastic identification algorithm that allows micro-nano analysis at single-particle level high chemical specificity throughput. We first validated enhancement narrow band SRS enable high-speed single nanoplastic detection below 100 nm. then devised data-driven spectral matching imposed by sensitive narrow-band achieve robust determination common polymers. With established technique, studied plastics from bottled water as model system. successfully detected identified major types. Micro-nano concentrations were estimated about 2.4 ± 1.3 × 10

The presence of microplastics in food poses a significant concern due to its potential impact on human health. Numerous studies have focused spectroscopic techniques identify and confirm those contaminants food, but less attention has been paid chromatographic techniques. Thus, this article provides comprehensive review the recent applications analysis related compounds such as bisphenols phthalate esters from 2018 2022. study covers discusses range different (gas liquid chromatography). Furthermore, also explores sample treatments employed for extracting these matrices, while offering detailed their principles, advantages, disadvantages. This readers with an overview valuable insights into analytical performance food.

Abstract Microplastics have been documented in drinking water, but their effects on human health from ingestion, or the concentrations at which those begin to manifest, are not established. Here, we report outcome of a virtual expert workshop conducted between October 2020 and 2021 comprehensive review mammalian hazard studies was conducted. A key objective this assessment evaluate feasibility confidence deriving health-based threshold value inform development State California’s monitoring management strategy for microplastics water. tiered approach adopted quality reliability identified peer-reviewed scientific literature. total 41 vitro 31 vivo using mammals were subjected Tier 1 screening prioritization exercise, based an evaluation how each addressed various criteria. Prioritized largely application reporting dose–response relationships. Given that methods extrapolating systems currently lacking, only oral exposure as fit-for-purpose within context workshop. Twelve toxicity prioritized 2 qualitative by external experts. Of 12 studies, 7 adverse male female reproductive systems, while 5 reported other physiological endpoints. It is notable majority (83%) results single polymer type (polystyrene spheres), representing size range 0.040 20 µm. No study met all desired criteria, collectively toxicological with respect biomarkers inflammation oxidative stress represented consistent trend. While it possible derive conservative level activities, extrapolate human–health-based microplastics, due concerns regarding relative current data, also inability data monodisperse plastic particles, such polystyrene spheres environmentally relevant microplastics. Nevertheless, used estimate volume water (1000 L) could be support activities improve our overall understanding In order increase ability future, several research recommendations provided, emphasis towards strengthening should future improved insights critically important better risk assessments.
