Abstract Within the framework of studies plants as cognitive organisms, there is a hypothesis that plant processes are not enclosed within their bodies but extend to environment. The extended cognition (EPC) suggests when modify environment around them through release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), root exudates, and sustenance mycorrhizal networks, they sensorial apparatus externalize part information-processing system. As result, can no longer be seen an isolated organism easily distinguishable from its milieu. In this article, we discuss implications understanding organisms assess four test cases corroborate EPC hypothesis, one for each possible channel discussed here. We conclude new approach redefine how understand may also fruitful source inspiration develop techniques in agriculture by enhancing external elements cognition.

Winter wheat is an important cereal consumed worldwide. However, current management practices involving chemical fertilizers, irrigation, and intensive tillage may have negative impacts on the environment. Conservation agriculture often presented as a sustainable alternative to maintain production, favoring beneficial microbiome. Here, we evaluated impact of different water regimes (rainfed irrigated), fertilization levels (half full fertilization), (occasional no-tillage) performance, microbial activity, rhizosphere- root-associated communities four winter genotypes (Antequera, Allez-y, Apache, Cellule) grown in field experiment. Wheat performance (i.e., yield, plant nitrogen concentrations, total uptake) was mainly affected by fertilization, genotype, whereas activity protease alkaline phosphatase activities) irrigation. Amplicon sequencing data revealed that habitat (rhizosphere vs. root) main factor shaping confirmed selection endophytic takes place thanks specific plant–microbiome interactions. Among experimental factors applied, interaction irrigation influenced microbiomes. The findings this work make it possible link agricultural communities, paving way for better monitoring these microorganisms context agroecosystem sustainability.
