Using natural enemies provides a sustainable method to control major agricultural pests. Hoverflies are significant of aphids and efficient pollinators. Herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs), including (E)-β-farnesene (EBF) methyl salicylate (MeSA), key olfactory cues mediating hoverflies behavior. Our previous work identified compound 3e, an EBF analog containing MeSA moiety, exhibited aphid-repelling ladybug-attracting activities. However, whether 3e can attract remains unknown. Therefore, this study explored the attractant property potential mechanism toward hoverflies. Laboratory bioassays field trials indicated has obvious hoverfly attracting property. The attraction studies demonstrate that, similar EBF, interact with EcorOBP15 EcorOR3, its greater chemical softness, larger hydrophobic charge regions enhancing these interactions. Furthermore, low toxicity honeybees (Apis mellifera) (Eupeodes corollae). Consequently, could be promising eco-friendly behavioral regulator for integrated aphid management in agriculture.

Abstract Oviposition behavior in insects has received considerable attention, but studies have mainly focused on the antennae, neglecting role of ovipositor. In this study, we investigated functional characteristics ovipositor oviposition site selection by fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda , a destructive invasive pest maize and other cereals. choice assays females exhibited significant repellency to isothiocyanate (ITC), volatiles specific non‐preferred cruciferous plants. Females retained ITC or attraction even after antennae removal. Scanning electron microscopy indicated presence olfactory‐associated sensilla Comparative transcriptome analysis vitro showed that S. odorant binding protein 30 ( SfruOBP30 ), exclusively expressed ovipositor, displayed broad sensitivity toward 18 10 compounds. Site‐directed mutant assay revealed Ser71 Ser85 were key sites for interacting with ITCs volatiles, respectively. Silencing expression resulted loss bias FAW, significantly inhibiting their ability avoid locate substrate. Overall, propose does not just seek out advantageous conditions immature stages more importantly, avoids potential risks during process. Apparently, involvement S fruOBP30 plays critical detecting both beneficial harmful substances intricate

Rose (Rosa chinensis), as the most popular cut flowers in world, is perennially attacked by rose powdery mildew (Podosphaera pannosa) and beet armyworm (Spodoptera exigua). The indirect plant-mediated interactions between these two pests always exist ternary system consisting of three organisms, but little known about molecular mechanisms for such interactions. In this paper, we investigated function an insect-resistance-related gene rose, RcFAR1, encoding a fatty acyl coenzyme A reductase. was expressed roses when plants were infected P. pannosa, consequence, resistance against S. exigua significantly induced. results from heterologous expression RcFAR1 Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed that primarily accumulated primary alcohols, including C12:0, C16:0, C18:0 using GC-MS analyses. Overexpression Arabidopsis thaliana resulted 4.0-, 3.6-, 8.2-, 3.1-fold increases contents alcohols T1 generation A. C14:0, C18:0, respectively, suggesting catalyzes biosynthesis plants. Our study has elucidated mechanism synthesis dodecanol, tetradecanol, hexadecanol other pannosa-infected roses, thus revealed one important regulatory which resistances are induced infection pannosa.

Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) in insects are key to detection and recognition of external chemical signals associated with survival. OBP7 Spodoptera frugiperda's larval stage (SfruOBP7) may search for host plants by sensing plant volatiles, which important sources pest attractants repellents. However, the atomic-level basis binding modes remains elusive.

Abstract The olfactory system of above‐ground insects is among the best described perceptual architectures. However, remarkably little known about how below‐ground navigate in dark for foraging. Here, we investigated host plant preferences, sensilla and characterise proteins larvae striped flea beetle (SFB) Phyllotreta striolata Fabricius (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Both adults this coleopteran pest cause serious damage to Brassicaceous crops above below ground, respectively. To elucidate role location larvae, initially demonstrated that SFB distinctly favoured Brassicaceae over other families by two‐choice behavioural bioassay. Subsequently, scanning electron microscopy larval head showed a significant reduction number compared with adults. essential such as basiconica are underscoring indispensability system. We selected four larval‐specific odorant binding functional validation from our previous transcriptome data. Functional studies revealed PstrOBP23 exhibits robust affinity 24 volatiles plants, including seven isothiocyanate compounds. This suggests pivotal foraging behaviour ground. Moreover, two ligands displaying strong capacity exhibit apparent attractive or repellent activity towards larvae. Our findings provide crucial insight into SFB, highlighting highly selective tuning specific OBP volatiles. These results offer potential avenues developing effective control strategies against SFB.
