The vivid colors of visible spectroscopy are amenable to classroom activities where students can view a demonstration and make observations. Here we report an active learning in-class activity that combines both absorption luminescence spectroscopy. is based on outreach involving glowing gelatin dessert. Students use absorbance spectra determine the optimal color prepare brightest most impactful demonstration. During activity, learn difference between emission relationship λmax observed solution color, they consider preparing for activities. Surveys assessment demonstrated enjoyed reinforced these concepts contributed topics. Instructors may implement this with or without demonstration, as worksheet photos provided.

Congo red is toxic to humans and the environment persists in for long periods. Therefore, developing a rapid detection method crucial. In this study, iron oxide quantum dots (IOQDs) were synthesized employed dual-mode (colorimetric smartphone-based) of real samples. Upon mixing with red, IOQDs induce color change solution due strong intermolecular interactions between IOQDs, making them practical as colorimetric sensors. To further increase on-site capabilities images sensor platform captured using smartphone, data analyzed dedicated APP. As sensor, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorbance response exhibited good linearity concentrations 2 50 μM, limit 0.89 μM. The smartphone-based also provided highly quantitative results, showing linear relationship blue-to-red (B/R) channel ratio, 0.58 Moreover, demonstrated better selectivity than other sensors, even presence dyes. proposed convenient, fast, low-cost, suitable real-sample applications.

To examine the water-induced photoluminescence turn-on and its potential application in trace water sensing, a new series of [LnIII(dmba)3(H2O)2]·2H2O, where LnIII = LaIII (I), PrIII (II), NdIII (III), SmIII (IV), EuIII (V), GdIII (VI), TbIII (VII), DyIII (VIII), HoIII (IX), ErIII (X), were synthesized using dimethoxybenzoic acid (Hdmba). Their single-crystal structures thermal chemical robustness investigated, effects lanthanide contraction noncovalent interactions discussed. The colorimetric properties I–X investigated. dependence on dehydration rehydration was disclosed, from which significant role proposed. Based dehydration–rehydration-dependent responses forms emission color, turn-off (dehydration) (rehydration) red (V) demonstrated. Using mobile phone camera freeware application, use sensing polar organic solvents successfully achieved. With respect to ethanol, acetonitrile, acetone, linear correlations established 0 3–5% by volume with an R2 over 0.98. detection quantification limits less than 0.5 1.5%, respectively. percentage recoveries 92 110%. underlying mechanism postulated.
