A synthetic route to 2′,7′-dimethyl-3H-spiro[isobenzofuran-1,9′-xanthen]-3-one has been described using methanesulfonic acid in place of reagents protocols from the early 20th century. full NMR assignment made and X-ray crystallography used characterise title compound for first time.
