Environmentally benign, nontoxic electrolytes with combinatorial design spaces are excellent candidates for green solvents, leaching agents, and carbon capture sources. We examine ethaline, a 2:1 molar ratio of ethylene glycol choline chloride. Despite its touted credentials, we find partial decomposition ethaline into toxic chloromethane dimethylaminoethanol at room temperature, limiting sustainable advantage. experimentally characterize these products computationally develop general, quantum-chemically accurate workflow to understand decomposition. that fluctuations in the hydrogen bonds bind chloride near reaction sites, initiating between cations anions. The strong formed resistant thermal perturbations, entrapping Cl high-energy states promoting uphill reaction. In stable recommend detailed evaluation hydrogen-bonding potential energy landscape as key consideration generating solvent mixtures.
