Carbon dots (CDs) have garnered attention for their potential applications across diverse fields. This is attributed to characteristics, which include abundant raw material sources, uncomplicated surface modification, cost-effectiveness, excellent fluorescence, low toxicity, and biocompatibility. In this review, we introduced the top-down bottom-up synthesis techniques of CDs. Then, discuss physical, chemical, optical features focus on in environmental analysis, including metal ion sensing, contaminants detection, photocatalysts, other aspect. We presented conclusions future perspectives challenges The review will provide insights into evolving landscape CD research its pivotal role advancing analytical techniques.
