Wastewater effluents increase contaminant levels in the aquatic environment, leading to various disruptive effects. In this study, responses of Unio ravoisieri transplanted into wastewater from Wadi Guenniche were monitored using filtration rate, oxidative stress, lipo-peroxidation, neurotoxicity and histopathological markers. The rate was significantly increased by exposure diluted wastewater, rising 35.13 mg indiv−1 h−1 control 63.49 mussels after 96 h exposure. contrast, reduces catalase, glutathione-S-transferase acetylcholinesterase activities both organs. Technological advances have boosted the ability to obtain large and high-quality ecological data. These new technological tools potential rapidly develop knowledge on how species behave interact in ecosystems at relevant spatial temporal scales. Comprehensive time-series datasets situ behaviour dispersal of wild organisms are essential for addressing fundamental physiological questions regarding non-native freshwater species. In this review, we address biosensors, hereby defined as a tool electronic tagging tracking, can be useful assessing movement, internal states species, plus information about surrounding environment discuss possibilities future research. We performed systematic review available literature retrieved total 132 scientific studies (from 1996 2023) detailing 140 examples sensor use. Most used radio telemetry (40%; n = 53) followed by acoustic (34%; 45) PIT (20%; 26) study The taxonomic group most studied was fish (72%; 109), crustaceans (14%; 21) amphibians (5%; 8). addressed topics included assessment 101), physiology (10%; 14) management (9%; 12). As expected, number noticeably increased since 2006, with majority North America (55%; 73), Europe (30%; 40) Oceania (7%; 9). Information provided biosensors better understand dynamics impacts cryptic applied biological invasions. also directions concerning use (e.g. underwater internet systems, artificial intelligence, crittercams). Overall, these technologies provide unique field invasions development their limitations will increase amount reliability data gathered actions.

ABSTRACT The introduction of invasive species has become an increasing environmental problem in freshwater ecosystems due to the high economic and ecological impacts it generated. This systematic review covers publications from 2010 2020, focusing on non‐native bivalves, a particularly relevant widespread introduced taxonomic group fresh waters. Micro- and nanoplastics are globally important environmental pollutants. Although research in this field is continuously improving, there a number of uncertainties, inconsistencies methodological challenges the effect assessment micro- nanoparticles freshwater systems. The current understanding adverse effects partly biased by use non-relevant particle types, unsuitable test setups environmentally unrealistic dose metrics, which does not take into account realistic processes uptake consequent effects. Here we summarize state art compiling most recent with aim to highlight gaps further necessary steps towards more harmonized testing In particular, ecotoxicological scenarios need mirror diversity bioavailability. Harmonized should include different pathways, exposures comparisons natural reference particles. Effect assessments differentiate direct physical effects, such as lesions toxicity caused polymer, from indirect alterations ambient conditions leaching, change turbidity, food dilution organisms' behavior. Implementation these suggestions can contribute harmonization effective, evidence-based nanoplastics.

A significant part of freshwater mussel populations has strongly declined and many species are severely threatened nowadays. Captive breeding programs often form a central conservation strategies. As the life cycles include an obligate parasitic phase, host fish health is crucial component successful efforts. However, information about safe application therapeutants in captive scarce. This article summarizes practical experiences Europe. In total, eight different were used to treat infestations pathogens. Treatment success varied depending on pathogen prevalence when treatments initiated. Mussels did not seem be affected by treatments, especially as long they remained encysted. second step, Virkon S was applied fungal infection tanks with brown trout (Salmo trutta) carrying encysted pearl (Margaritifera margaritifera) glochidia disinfect juvenile rearing containers. both cases, mussels harmed treated fully recovered. Results indicate that certain can safely successfully at stages cycles. Nevertheless, there still lack standard protocols, which would improve efficiency safety treatments.

Abstract Background Freshwater mussels are important keystone and indicator species of aquatic ecosystems. Recent advances in sensor technology facilitate applications to individually track record monitor their behavior physiology. These approaches require the attachment devices as “backpacks” outer shell surface. The interpretation such data makes it necessary understand influence these attachments on horizontal vertical movement behaviors freshwater mussels. Over a series mesocosm experiments, this study systematically investigated effects three size- wiring-specific variants artificially attached backpacks Anodonta anatina. Results Across all equipping with did not result significant for any backpack variants. In contrast finding, big high ratio between volume mussel length resulted significantly negative effect movement, indicating potential adverse mussels, especially natural settings. Conclusions findings show that assessing requires species-specific evaluation impacts endpoints interest. Especially patterns, selection smallest available appears mandatory.
