Applications of biosensors in non-native freshwater species: a systematic review

Technological
advances
have
boosted
the
ability
to
obtain
large
and
high-quality
ecological
data.
These
new
technological
tools
potential
rapidly
develop
knowledge
on
how
species
behave
interact
in
ecosystems
at
relevant
spatial
temporal
scales.
Comprehensive
time-series
datasets
situ
behaviour
dispersal
of
wild
organisms
are
essential
for
addressing
fundamental
physiological
questions
regarding
non-native
freshwater
species.
In
this
review,
we
address
biosensors,
hereby
defined
as
a
tool
electronic
tagging
tracking,
can
be
useful
assessing
movement,
internal
states
species,
plus
information
about
surrounding
environment
discuss
possibilities
future
research.
We
performed
systematic
review
available
literature
retrieved
total
132
scientific
studies
(from
1996
2023)
detailing

ABSTRACT
The
introduction
of
invasive
species
has
become
an
increasing
environmental
problem
in
freshwater
ecosystems
due
to
the
high
economic
and
ecological
impacts
it
generated.
This
systematic
review
covers
publications
from
2010
2020,
focusing
on
non‐native
bivalves,
a
particularly
relevant
widespread
introduced
taxonomic
group
fresh
waters.
We
collected
information
most
studied
species,
main
objectives
studies,
their
geographical
location,
study
duration,
type
research.
Furthermore,
we
focused
assessing
levels
evidence
presented,
interactions
bivalves
with
other
organisms
classification
impacts.
A
total
397
were
retrieved.

nanoplastics
are
globally

environmental
pollutants.
Although
research
in
this
field
is
continuously
improving,
there
a
number
of
uncertainties,
inconsistencies

Abstract
Background
Freshwater
mussels
are
important
keystone
and
indicator
species
of
aquatic
ecosystems.
Recent
advances
in
sensor
technology
facilitate
applications
to
individually
track
record
monitor
their
behavior

“backpacks”

The
