The disinfection of drinking water has been a major public health achievement, significantly reducing waterborne diseases. However, there are also some drawbacks in this practice, particularly the fact that chlorinated disinfectants can generate by-products (DBPs) which turn have associated with adverse effects, including birth defects. extent to such reproductive effect may occur following consumption, and possible threshold exposure involved, however not entirely clear. This systematic review dose-response meta-analysis aimed evaluate association between DBP risk congenital anomalies, focus on thresholds. We conducted search Scopus, PubMed, Web Science up March 18, 2025, retrieve observational studies assessing reporting anomalies birth-related outcomes. performed assess A total 31 met inclusion criteria. comparing highest versus lowest levels found positive trihalomethanes (THMs) prevalence at cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, neural tube, urinary tract defects, as well most growth-related analysis revealed nonlinear association, increased risks for anencephaly, orofacial defects THM exceeding 60 μg/L, term low weight above 30 μg/L. plateau was observed while small-for-gestational-age infants showed nearly linear exposure. These findings suggest high exposure, certain thresholds, increase growth supported by biological plausibility. Given existing regulatory limits (80-100 μg/L US EU), our results indicate need stricter standards protect vulnerable populations pregnant women.

Developing greener alternatives for harmful conventional cleaning agents is an important focus preventing negative impacts on both the environment and human health. One potential alternative of interest photodynamic inactivation (PDI), where a photosensitizing molecule used to generate singlet oxygen (1O2) other reactive species (ROS). ROS, 1O2 in particular, are known react with cellular membranes bacteria, resulting death. Porphyrinoids one these light sensitizing species. In this work, zinc(II) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis((N-4-[3-(trifluoromethyl)-3H-diazirin-3-yl]benzyl)-4-pyridyl)-21H,23H-porphine tetrabromide covalently attached polyethylene terephthalate (PET) via thermal activation diazirine initiate C-H insertion. With porphyrin now bonded PET, functionalized PET was assessed at range intensities its ability antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli; results were found be correlated. Because photobleaching resultant loss weaknesses PDI, material further withstand various conditions. The conditions high intensity dry underwater ambient light, along set dark controls. Results indicate that after 2 weeks irradiation, still mediates generation, albeit less efficiently. This shows promise use approach as agents.

Water safety planning is a risk management approach that accounts for quantitative and qualitative drinking water hazards includes ongoing input from stakeholders. This has been applied in jurisdictions across the world including Canada. Rural remote communities Canada, impacted by safety, stand to benefit most holistic approaches such as planning. Unfortunately, these typically have limited resources engage this approach. Additionally, rely on truck cistern systems, which less understood than Canada with piped service. In study, we report results of an initial case study Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. We identified numerous quality disinfection byproducts trucks, manganese source water, copper tap well operational challenges increase emergencies community. conclude potential substantially improve Nunavut but current information gaps complex stakeholder interactions are likely hinder top-down attempts. A dynamic inclusive recommended incorporates targeted exploration hazards.
