Ligand-shell engineering of ultrasmall metal clusters is a burgeoning research field aiming to develop cluster-specific properties. However, predicting these properties prior synthesis challenging due their high sensitivity geometric and/or electronic variations in cores, hindering further exploration. In this study, we present theory-directed ligand-shell design and significant red-shift absorption prolate-shaped [Au8(diphosphine)4Cl2]2+ cluster by synthesizing characterizing enantiopure octagold bearing chiral BINAP-type ligands [BINAP = 2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl]. Crystallographic analysis reveals the predesigned ligand arrangement twisted gold-core framework. The enantiomeric show changes both photoluminescence compared with previous Au8 analogue exhibit chiroptical signals. Furthermore, theoretical calculations visually unveil atomic level origins optical characteristics. This work not only highlights effectiveness creating unique photophysical but also offers viable, theory-guided strategy for designing functionalizing ligated clusters.

The development of nanoclusters (NCs) capable multicolor emissions for simultaneous detection multiple analytes has aroused tremendous interest. However, the current methods synthesizing NCs with mainly depend on a ligand strategy, which not only compromises stability but also alters their physicochemical properties. Herein, we propose novel strategy designing single-ligand capped bimetallic Au/Os fluorescence by adjusting size NCs. This size-controlled, encapsulation enhances and compatibility ensures uniformity in properties, thereby overcoming limitations inherent multiligand systems. By meticulously modulating reaction parameters, achieved precise tuning size, resulting synthesis fluorescent displaying blue (465 nm), green (507 yellow (560 nm) emissions. These were then incorporated into an array system differentiation tetracyclines (TCs) virtue interaction TCs through inner filter effect (IFE). Finally, each TC elicited unique response, was subsequently analyzed principal component analysis. sensor been successfully employed milk, urine, water, demonstrating its practical application potential. developed this work holds great promise

ConspectusAtomically precise metal clusters with well-defined crystal structures have emerged as a rapidly growing field within coordination and materials chemistry. Among them, lanthanide-containing (LCCs) are particularly notable for their aesthetically pleasing architectures intriguing properties. Achieving synthesis accurate structural characterization of these is crucial unlocking potential applications. Mass spectrometry (MS), electrospray ionization mass (ESI-MS), has proven to be powerful tool, providing exceptional sensitivity clarity in revealing the formation mechanisms details clusters. In this Account, we explore synthesis, characterization, assembly LCCs utilizing ESI-MS. We begin by tracing historical development LCCs, emphasizing critical role single-crystal X-ray diffraction confirmation challenges associated it. then discuss application ESI-MS characterizing highlighting how technique can monitor processes determine molecular weights charge states. introduce difference fingerprint isomorphism (MDFI) method, which facilitate rapid analysis LCCs' data. Furthermore, state solution characterization. By ESI-MS, enhance understanding propose new strategies designing synthesizing tailored functions. Looking forward, method will play increasingly significant roles LCC research. The continued technologies deepen structure-property relationships.
