Abstract
Investigating
the
self‐sorting
behaviour
of
assemblies
with
subtle
structural
differences
is
a
captivating
yet
challenging
endeavour.
Herein,
we
elucidate
unusual
metallacages
in
batch
reactors
and
microdroplets.
Narcissistic
has
been
observed
for
two
ligands
identical
sizes,
shapes,
symmetries,
only
minor
substituted
groups.
In
particular,
process
microdroplets
occurs
within
1
min
at
room
temperature,
stark
contrast
to
reactors,
which
require
equilibration
30
min.
To
reveal
mechanism
role
microdroplets,
conducted
series
experiments
theoretical
calculations,
including
competitive
self‐assembly,
cage‐to‐cage
transformation,
control
involving
model
larger
cavities,
noncovalent
interaction
analysis,
root
mean
square
deviation
(RMSD)
analysis.

new
strategy

efficiency
supramolecular

We
report
the
synthesis
and
characterization
of
various
compounds
containing
1,7,9-hydroxylated
closo-dodecahydrododecaborate
(B12H9(OH)32–)
cluster
motif.
Specifically,
we
show
how
parent
compound
can
be
synthesized
on
multigram
scale
further
perhalogenated,
leading
to
a
new
class
vertex-differentiated
weakly
coordinating
anions.
that
postmodification
hydroxyl
groups
by
alkylation
affords
opportunities
for
tailoring
these
anions'
stability,
steric
bulk,
solubility
properties.
The
resulting
dodecaborate-based
salts
were
subjected
full
thermal
electrochemical
stability
evaluation,
showing
many
anions
maintain
up
500
°C
feature
no
redox
activity
below
∼1
V
vs
Fc/Fc+.
Mixed
hydroxylated/halogenated
clusters
enhanced
compared
their
purely
halogenated
analogs
retain
properties
in
solid
state,
as
demonstrated
ionic
conductivity
measurements

While
cage
C-arylation
reactions
using
strong
bases
are
among
the
most
frequently
used
transformations
in
carborane
chemistry,

no
general
solution
to
allow
for
use
of
weak
reaction.

heteroarylation
